Country music superstar and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood is poised to play one of the most treasured roles in the musical theatre and movie canon, that of Maria Von Trapp in Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic family-friendly musical THE SOUND OF MUSIC and the first shot of Underwood on the set of the upcoming live NBC TV event, in full costume, has now been released by People Magazine.

Underwood has previously been seen only once so far in character, with last month's reveal of the atmospheric poster for the eagerly awaited broadcast, so this new shot is our very first taste of the real thing in action.

Underwood perches atop a camera truck outfitted in a Viennese-styled royal blue dress with a perfectly pressed and starched white blouse in the new still captured on set.

Clearly, Miss Underwood is a Maria fit for a family photo already!

Earlier this week, BroadwayWorld covered a series of Tweets made by the popular recording star relating to THE SOUND OF MUSIC, including Underwood's attendance at similarly the girl-power-fueled Rodgers & Hammerstein musical CINDERELLA, currently on Broadway, as well as her sharing of excitement over ongoing rehearsals. Check out that article here.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC, directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford, produced by Craig Zadan & Neil Meron, airs on December 5 at 8 PM on NBC.
