Balitmore Playwrights Festival to Stage SHADOWS OF MEN and FEEDING THE FURIES Readings

Join us for a free staged reading of one of the plays submitted by local playwrights for consideration for next summer's Baltimore Playwrights Festival.

The next Play Development Workshop Reading is on Saturday, March 26 at Fells Point Corner Theatre, 251 South Ann Street.

Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before the reading is to begin. Readings of plays submitted for our 35th Season begin promptly and are followed by a short talkback.

The readings are free and are open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

Shadows of Men by Colin Crowley

It's Spain, 1937 and the Spanish Civil War is raging. Enter a laundry list of American celebrities, eager to take up the cause of the Spanish Republic. For one of these, however - novelist John Dos Passos - attention soon towards to his friend, José Robles, who has mysteriously disappeared during the struggles and turmoil of the conflict. Dos Passos quickly becomes obsessed with finding his dear friend - an obsession which grates on the nerves of his literary colleagues, especially the acerbic Ernest Hemingway, who finds Dos Passos's focus on friendship rather pedestrian when democracy itself is at stake. Dos Passos, however, remains single-minded in his pursuit, despite the all-encompassing, ever-maddening whirlwind of war, ego, and ideology swirling around him - but the end of his journey may take him to a destination he never wanted to visit.

Colin Speer Crowley is a playwright-lyricist whose plays and screenplays have been winners or finalists in over 30 national and international contests since 2010, and songs to which he's written the lyrics have been performed in musical revues in London. Most recently, Crowley's work has been performed in theatrical capitals on both sides of the Atlantic, including Off-Off-Broadway and London's Covent Garden. Crowley is a member of the Dramatists Guild, the Lambs Club, the Playwright's Center, and Phi Beta Kappa and also served as President and founder of the theatrical group Speerhead Theatricals, Inc.

Feeding the Furies by Andrea Markowitz

Aspirations run amok when Ruthie and Marty Furie attempt to live the 1960s American Dream that glorifies upward mobility, domineering husbands, and obedient wives and children. While Ruthie and Marty are successful at keeping up with the Joneses, their marriage is rife with conflict and they can't control their counterculture kids. The family airs their differences in their favorite restaurant, where it becomes apparent that they all hunger for more than what's on the menu.

Andrea Markowitz became hooked on theatre at age seven, when she saw her first Broadway show. She earned degrees in English literature, musicology and psychology, and enjoyed careers in advertising, human resources, academia, and freelance writing before authoring Feeding the Furies, her first play.
