Tony Winners Lithgow and Ehle Are 'MR. & MRS. FITCH' For Second Stage Theatre

Second Stage Theatre (Carole Rothman, Artistic Director) has announced that Tony Award winners John Lithgow and Jennifer Ehle will star as MR. & MRS. FITCH in the world premiere comedy from Douglas Carter Beane.

The production marks MR. Beane's return to Second Stage Theatre where his critically acclaimed, Tony-nominated play The Little Dog Laughed premiered in 2005. MR. & MRS. FITCH will be directed by Scott Ellis, who also staged the world premiere and Broadway transfer of The Little Dog Laughed.

Previews begin at Second Stage Theatre (307 West 43rd street) on January 26, 2010; opening night is scheduled for Monday, February 22.

Press notes describe the play as, "Meet gossip columnists MR. & MRS. FITCH. When the social circuit no longer provides any scandalous news, they find that great celebrity can appear out of thin air. Tony Award nominee Douglas Carter Beane's wicked new comedy is a scathing look at who is in, who is out and who may not even exist at all."

MR. & MRS. FITCH will feature scenic design by Allen Moyer, costume design by Jeff Mahshie, and lighting design by Kenneth Posner.

The World Premiere production of MR. & MRS. FITCH is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

In London's West End she has appeared in The Philadelphia Story, The Real Thing (Olivier nomination), Tartuffe (Ian Charleston Award) and at London's National Theatre she appeared in Summerfolk. RSC productions include Richard III, Painter of Dishonor, The Relapse. Douglas Carter Beane returns to Second Stage Theatre, which produced the world premiere of his Tony-nominated play The Little Dog Laughed. In 1999, Second Stage Theatre opened its state-of-the-art, 296-seat theatre, designed by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. In 2002, Second Stage launched "Second Stage Theatre Uptown" series to showcase the work of up and coming artists at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre. The Theatre supports artists through several programs that include residencies, fellowships and commissions, and engages students and community members through education and outreach programs.

Second Stage Theatre recently announced that it has acquired the right to purchase the historic Helen Hayes Theatre, located at 240 W. 44th Street. With this new home, Second Stage will be the only theater company on Broadway dedicated exclusively to the development and presentation of contemporary American theatrical productions. Second Stage will also become one of only four non-profit theater companies that own and operate theaters on Broadway. The company will continue to lease and operate their original theaters on the city's Upper West Side and in Midtown Manhattan. Programming in the Helen Hayes will begin in 2011.

Second Stage Theatre is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony-winning musical Next to Normal, which is playing at the Booth Theatre. Its upcoming season will kick off on September 15 with the New York premiere of Let Me Down Easy, conceived, written, and performed by Anna Deavere Smith and directed by Leonard Foglia.
