Jackson's New Stage Theatre will present ONCE ON THIS ISLAND JR. as part of its Broadway Junior Summer Camp program.

The one-act musical is an original adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. According to New Stage Theatre's website, "Through almost non-stop song and dance, this full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred, and even death."

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND includes book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, Suessical, Anastasia) and music by Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Suessical, Anastasia). The original Broadway production ran for 469 performances at the Booth Theatre from 1990-1991. It was nominated for eight Tony Awards. It will receive its first Broadway revival this year at the Circle in the Square Theatre. Previews begin in November with an official opening slated for December 3.

The New Stage Theatre's production of ONCE ON THIS ISLAND JR. will be directed by Chris Roebuck with musical direction by Harlan Zackery, Jr.

The production will run from July 13-16 at the Jane Reid-Petty Theatre Center in Jackson. Showtimes are 7:00 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased on line at http://newstagetheatre.com/tickets
