Review: PRAYERS FOR A HUNGRY GHOST, Barbican
by Cindy Marcolina - October 30, 2025
The Barbican has the perfect Halloween show. With a multi-media production devised by Elisabeth Gunawan, Daniel York Loh, and Jasmine Chiu, it will destabilise and provoke you. In Chinese mythology, the greedy, selfish, and envious get reincarnated into “hungry ghosts.” Forced to relive their actions until they learn from them, their insatiable, unfulfillable hunger drives them to ingest anything on their path, turning it to ashes. Talk about allegory!
Review: DIAL 1 FOR UK, Riverside Studios
by Cheryl Markosky - October 30, 2025
Anyone wanting to get to the bottom of newspaper stories about illegal migrants in Britain could learn a great deal from Dial 1 for UK at Riverside Studios. Written and performed by assured actor/dancer Mohit Mahur, his debut one-man play provides plenty of laughs, as well as poignancy when a migrant (loosely based on Mahur's own experience) discovers the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
Review: THE LINE OF BEAUTY, Almeida Theatre
by Katie Kirkpatrick - October 30, 2025
An award-winning LGBTQ novel, adapted for the stage by playwright of the moment Jack Holden (Cruising; Kenrex)... It sounds like a surefire hit for the Almeida, and sure enough, the entire run is currently fully sold out. But can a production be too sure of itself? Slick but straightforward, this premiere bucks the venue’s recent trend of plays that push the envelope.

In Tinned Laughter’s The Bang Gang, Don Lambrini is in trouble. He got on the wrong boat leaving Palermo in 1946 and, instead of his preferred destination of the Bronx, ended up in Blackpool. Thirty years later, his “waste management” firm is under threat from local competitors and now his nemesis has sent a button man to whack him. “Fray Bentos sends his regards,” says the hitman. “Why do they only send their regards when they want to murder someone?” wails the mafia boss as the assassin’s bullets plough into him.
Guest Blog: Writer and Actor Nancy Farino on Producing Her Debut Play, FATHERLAND
by Guest Author - October 29, 2025
My advice would be to don’t stop working on that thing. Whatever that writing project is. Feel free to become frustrated and put it away for a few weeks but keep it ticking away. I believe it’s immeasurably important for emerging writers - it is these spaces that shape the play, where mistakes can happen and solutions be found, without the pressure of a deadline or a looming opening night or financial stress. (On that note, we open 31 October at The Hampstead Theatre, please come?!)
