MARYBETH Z's roommate age 27
FAYE, Z's coworker. Age 33
JIMMY, bartender at "Paddycake's Irish Pub"
RANDOM BAR PATRON at Paddycake's
MARYBETH [through Z's closed bedroom door]
Girl, are you ready to go yet?
Z
Yeah, yeah - give me a few more minutes!
MARYBETH
Well, you'd better hurry up if you want to see get your flirt on with Jimmy again.
Z [sighing in slight exasperation]
I'm almost done - I promise!
MARYBETH
Well, I'm leaving for Paddycake's as soon as Faye gets here whether you're ready or not.
[Z made no response to this comment as she stands in front of her mirror holding up two of the sexiest/skimpiest outfits she owns. She sighs and addresses her own image in the mirror]
Z
Jimmy and I have been flirting for weeks - he's smart, funny and it doesn't hurt that he's cute. But we can't seem to go any further than that. [she blows a piece of hair out of her face]. I see the other women who come into the bar with their short skirts and low-cut tops. Maybe I my buttoned-up style doesn't cut it. I think it's time for something a little different. Or very different.
[Z emerges from her room just as there's a knock on the front door which is ignored by MARYBETH as she stares at her roommate. Z is wearing a red low-cut halter top and a sparkly black miniskirt]
MARYBETH [after finding her voice]
Damn girl - are you sure about this?
[The knocking at the door becomes more insistent and MARYBETH hurries to answer the door. FAYE walks in]
FAYE
You guys ready to go?
MARYBETH [still eyeing Z]
We are now
FAYE
Wow, Z, is that what you're wearing? Jimmy won't be able to take his eyes off you in that.
Z
That's the plan
[The three friends leave the apartment and head start the short trip to Paddycake's Irish Pub. Z was starting to feel a little uncomfortable in her ensemble. The confidence she'd found in her room was starting to fade. People were staring and she kept her eyes on the ground as they walked.]
At Paddycake's the evening was just beginning and the ladies were able to snag three seats at the bar. JIMMY spotted MARYBETH and walked over]
JIMMY
Hey, Marybeth, where's Z tonight? [Marybeth nods to Z and Jimmy's eyes widen]. Uh…hey, Z, you look…nice
Z [straightening slightly]
I thought it was time for a change.
[JIMMY nodded and walked away to get their drinks. When he brought them instead of staying to chat like he normally does he simply walked away. Z spent the evening watching him pour drinks and talk to anybody and everybody who came up to the bar. Everybody but her. FAYE and MARYBETH were trying to keep her occupied with their chatter but she wasn't having it. She became angrier and angrier as he ignored her.
Z [slapping some money on the bar and sliding off her stool]
I'm leaving
MARYBETH
Aww, c'mon, Z, stay with us.
Z [shaking her head]
I can't sit here and be ignored. I won't sit here and be ignored.
RANDOM BAR PATRON [leaning over unsteadily from her own bar stool]
Who needs a man? You're better off with a canary.
Z
I don't think so
[Z leaves Paddycake's followed by FAYE and MARYBETH.]
MARYBETH [hugging Z]
If it makes any difference I like you just the way you are. No slutty clothes change that.
Z [laughing]
I guess I really messed up this time, huh?
FAYE
Nah, everyone gets one free pass and you used yours tonight
Z [grinning and shaking her head]
You guys are the best
[The three friends hug when a voice calls out from offstage]
JIMMY
Hey, Z!
MARYBETH [taking FAYE'S arm and leading her away]
We're just going to head back to the apartment, Z. Catch you later
Z [stammering]
Wait, what?
[Before MARYBETH can answer JIMMY walks over to Z. FAYE and MARYBETH discreetly move away - but not too far away]
JIMMY [shoving his hands in his pockets]
Hey, Z
Z
Hi, Jimmy [they stare at each other for several moments before Z sighs] Something I can do for you?
JIMMY
I…I just wanted to ask why you did it. Why you changed.
Z [defensively]
I felt like I needed a change.
JIMMY
I liked you the way you were
Z
What?
JIMMY
This isn't you. You're not like the other women who come into the bar looking for whatever they can get. You have class and that's what I like about you.
Z [sighing]
I feel so stupid
JIMMY [taking her hand and pulling her closer to him]
Did you do this for me?
Z [looking away]
Well…
JIMMY [laughing]
It's the nicest thing anyone ever did for me but promise me tomorrow you'll be the real you again.
Z [nodding and smiling]
I promise
[They kiss]
