California, 1954. Katherine is brought before the McCarthy Committee to testify against MGM Film Studios’ possible communist sympathies. The flames rise higher when magical artifacts are discovered in the young receptionist’s desk. Secretary, witch, and Wizard Of Oz superfan: Katherine has a lot of ‘splaining to do.
Katherine Is Not A Communist is a wildly blended performance; it tosses American history, witchcraft history and some good old song and dance onto the stage and watches it boil over. Katherine Doering performs searing social satire, inviting her audience to both howl with laughter and cringe at their own preconceived notions. Like all new plays we set in the 1950’s, Communist is about 2018. It bites the hand that feeds it while smiling wide, it takes the familiar glitz of old Hollywood and erodes the veneer, and most of all it complicates the contemporary conversations surrounding feminism with abundant alliteration and satanic snark. In the words of director Curtis te Brinke, “I’m proud of the monster I’ve been lucky enough to create with Katherine, and can’t wait to unleash it on this city.”
From the team that brought you the breakout indie hits Imp (2017) and Tire Swing (2016), comes an acidly dark satire about dark magic, movie magic, and the ol’ razzle dazzle of nationalistic fervour. This One Woman Witch Hunt goes up November 2018 in Toronto.
