One heck of a blast was had at 'RENNIE HARRIS FUNKEDIFIED,' a funk-filled celebration of breakers, lockers, poppers, and kick-ass musicians doin' their thing, outside at the Ford Theatre, under the moonlight on a gorgeous summer eve up against the hills of Hollywood as the backdrop. This particular performance was also a Benefit Fundraiser for the Ford Theatre Foundation, and is part of the IGNITE @ THE FORD series, bringing contemporary artists whose work is thought-provoking and reflective of today's world to L A Theatre goers. What an energized evening! The Director/Choreographer/Writer/Creator Lorenzo Rennie Harris assembled a fantastic group of stylized entertainers, from the incredible RHF Band: Dave Levy, trumpet, Osei Kweku, Bass, Nicholas Marks, piano and Samir Zarif, saxophone, The Versa-Style Dance Company and so many other guest artists, to give an all-out visual motif of the '70s and all the funk and fantasticness it produced.

Although I never watched their program, I do remember that Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were wildly known almost as much for their outrageous personalities and sartorial style as their devotion to preaching the gospel of Jesus. It is easy to see why the pair became an unlikely surrogate family for the two teenagers from Detroit raised on that same belief, as they rapidly became the hottest stars in televangical America. But for the naive siblings, especially BeBe, it's not an easy lesson learning how to reconcile the temptations of fame and fortune with the things he ultimately values more. It's a wildy funny yet emotional journey toward self-discovery, told with great music and outstanding performances by siblings Juan Winans and Deborah Joy Winans (the children of Carvin Winans, Sr. and Deborah Winans) who portray their aunt CeCe and uncle BeBe with the utmost respect, magical stage presence, and the most amazing vocal pipes!

After Lesli Margherita's sold-out “Broad” concert at Birdland last week, there was a wild, celebrity-filled, super-charged Cast Party! As usual, the weekly event, hosted by Jim Caruso (with Billy Stritch at the piano, Daniel Glass on drums and Steve Doyle on bass) took the words “open mic” to a new level. The entire cast of the Lincoln Center's Merchant of Venice showed up to cheer their stars Jonathan Pryce, Giles Terera and Stefan Adigbola in impromptu performances before heading to their run at Kennedy Center. Multi-million record-selling Victoria Shaw, her mother Carol Shaw, and daughter Ruby Locknar all performed. Soul Train Award winner Nicole Henry sang her heart out. World-class trumpet player Dominick Farinaccci dazzled the crowd. Folk-singing superstar Christine Lavin had the audience out of their seats and dancing. Hamilton Award-winning singer Avery Raquel showed off her jazz chops. And theater writer Phillip Boroff sang, then proposed marriage to his girlfriend. (She said yes!) Is it any wonder Cast Party is known as the “come what mayhem” of Manhattan showbiz events?
