Using Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 cinema classic 'King Kong' as the inspiration for a musical theatre piece really isn't such a bad idea. Among the film's notable achievements is the extraordinary dramatic underscoring music by Max Steiner, that supplied the title character's tragic death plunge from atop the Empire State Building with the kind of heartbreaking emotion that would make any operatic tenor jealous.

Today, King Kong the Musical opens on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre. Many people are probably wondering, "how did King Kong end up a musical?" It does seem puzzling at first, to think a film about a giant gorilla can transcend film screens and land on the stage as a musical, but when you think about the impact King Kong has made on our culture for almost a century, it begins to make more sense.

The new musical King Kong opens on Broadway tonight, Thursday November 8, at the Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway). The cast is led by Christiani Pitts, (A Bronx Tale) as Ann Darrow, Eric William Morris (Mamma Mia!) as Carl Denham, and Erik Lochtefeld (Misery, Metamorphoses) as Lumpy.

KING KONG Cancels Wednesday Matinee for 'Final Adjustments'

Producers of the new Broadway musical King Kong have announced that the Wednesday, October 31 matinee at 2pm has been cancelled to allow further time to incorporate final adjustments in the production prior to its November 8 opening. The Wednesday evening performance will proceed as scheduled at 8PM.
