Doja Cat has never been an artist who follows expectations, whether through her music, fashion, or the personality she shares with the world. On Tuesday, October 13, the Grammy-winning rapper and singer brought that same individuality to Vancouver's Rogers Arena for a stop on her TOUR MA VIE World Tour, delivering a two-hour performance that balanced her unpredictable sense of humour with an impressive display of musical talent.

I wonder what Arrigo Boito might have done with Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors” or “Twelfth Night.” Because, while he’s best known for his libretto for the Bard’s “Othello,” his work on FALSTAFF—based on “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “Henry IV”—is just as marvelous. The trouble, of course, is that FALSTAFF is a comedy. In the new production of the work, which opened at Rome’s Opera House last week, it didn’t help that director Tatjana Gürbaca didn’t seem to have anything particular in mind in her take on it.

With so much time separating our current lives and those of Calgary Opera's TOSCA, you might expect the story to be archaic. It turns out that the central themes are still highly relevant in our modern world.

Whether you leave the theater with intensified despair or renewed hope is up to you — and that’s what makes this terrifying and achingly sad story, with just the right dose of humor, hope, and humanity, a brilliant piece of art.
