The Premier performance of GEARHEADS, playing at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre at the University of Michigan, is an original musical comedy, that follows the goings-on at an auto repair shop on a Saturday, when the shop’s owner and service manager are away, leaving the mechanics to run things. When a customer shows up needing a simple repair, she can’t get anyone to help her, because the guys would rather be anywhere else than at work. They turn their break room into a pseudo-frat house, and over the day, love is lost and found, the youngest mechanic has a coming-of-age experience, and the shop becomes a place where everyone belongs.

This 2022 revival of the 1964 musical is quite enjoyable, not because of its new changes (via director Michael Mayer and Harvey Fierstein's new book) but thanks mostly to its lead star McCrimmon, who is reason enough to see this touring iteration. The show continues at Segerstrom Center for the Arts (with co-star Melissa Manchester) through June 9.

Beginning with a Bernard Herrmann-like string fakeout, “Life” initially lands as a cinematic symphonic number. Cole’s voice, his drum set, and Sam Wilkes’s bass all join in at breakneck speed, the high velocity something for Cole and longtime creative partner Genevieve Artadi to flit over. Eventually, David Binney (saxophone) enters the fray with an equally blistering solo. Listen to the song now!
