While we salute each and every person who has played in a part in the Broadway experience (both onstage or off), BroadwayWorld is shining a spotlight on ten stars who had a particularly killer decade. 

West Side Story is officially in previews on Broadway! The new production is directed by Tony Award winner Ivo van Hove; and for the first time ever in the United States, will feature all-new choreography by the internationally acclaimed Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker. West Side Story will begin previews on December 10, 2019 and open February 6th, 2020 at the Broadway Theatre.

As the decade comes to a close on Broadway, we're doling out some good, old-fashioned superlatives to acknowledge some of the best and brightest theatre people, show elements, and productions that have made this decade one of the best in Broadway history.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, has announced the recipients of the third round of the 2019 Edgerton Foundation New Play Awards. The awards, totaling $415,000, allow 9 productions extra time for the development and rehearsal of new plays with the entire creative team, hoping to extend the life of the world premiere play after its first run. 

Manifest Pussy is a deeply personal and profound her-story, the story of how Shakina went from a nice Jewish boy growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, dreaming of dressing up in the gossamer gowns that were forbidden to him, to the relentlessly exuberant, terrifically talented, hilarious and kind buxom star of stage and screen.

BroadwayCon has unveiled a first look at its programming schedule for BroadwayCon 2020. The BroadwayCon 2020 schedule features three days packed with events curated with Broadway's biggest fans, performers, and creators in mind. PuSh International Performing Arts Festival (PuSh) presents the Western Canadian premiere of Montreal choreographer Dana Gingras' visually arresting new work, FRONTERA, for one-night only, January 30, 2020 at 8pm at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Gingras and her internationally lauded dance company, Animals of Distinction, collaborate with the experimental post-rock band Fly Pan Am and members of the UK-based collective United Visual Artists to create a provocative multimedia experience of motion, sound, and light.

CBS has ordered GAME ON!, a sports comedy entertainment series based on “A League of Their Own,” the BAFTA-winning U.K. series currently in its 14th season on Sky. The U.S. version will be hosted by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning actor, writer and producer Keegan-Michael Key, and will feature tennis champion and entrepreneur Venus Williams and New England Patriots Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski as team captains. Actor and comedian Bobby Lee (“Mad TV,” “Tiger Belly”) and Emmy Award-winning writer Ian Karmel (THE LATE LATE SHOW with JAMES CORDEN) will serve as comedian panelists.

MTKCMusic Theatre Kansas City (MTKC) is well known around town for offering steady, top-quality musicals performed by the city's best youth talent. In 2016, MTKC introduced its first paid-professional production with The Last Five Years and the start of the longtime local theater company's expansion into professional-level performances. Since then, they presented a sell-out production of Avenue Q as the Kansas City professional premiere, the newest revival version of Pippin as well two Christmas musicals, A Wonderful Life and the regional premiere of All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914.

Critically acclaimed, Edinburgh Comedy Award nominated duo Max & Ivan have added an additional three dates to their UK tour of hit show Commitment. This is the duo's first fully autobiographical show, directed by triple Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominee Kieran Hodgson, and comes in the wake of rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and a sold out run at the Soho Theatre, London. Two years ago, I revisited French Woods Festival of the Arts (which I attended from 1999 to 2002 as a camper/teen actor and then as an assistant director/stage manager) and BroadwayWorld kindly published an article I wrote about the experience. In light of my responsibilities at work (attorney by day, theater critic by night) and at home (including a hyperactive toddler and commuting daily between NY and NJ), I was not planning on visiting again this past summer, but that instantly changed when I learned that the camp was planning on presenting 1776 for the first time in nearly two decades - and with an all-female cast.

The Louder We Get (opening on January 28th 2020 at Theatre Calgary's Max Bell Theatre) tells the true story of Marc Hall and the court case that allowed him to take his boyfriend to prom. Prom 26: Mozart's Requiem, is the perfect expression of the Proms in a darker mood; a captivating evening of music redolent of love, loss and death. This was a wonderfully emotionally charged concert, with powerful performances of epic pieces.

The party's over, Broadway! As BroadwayWorld previously reported, The Prom will have its last dance today August 11th. Upon its final performance, THE PROM will have played 23 preview and 310 regular performances. The show has a big future already in the works, however...
