Contra Costa Civic Theatre will return to live, in-person Main Stage productions this fall with one of the giants of the American theatre, Thornton Wilder's Our Town.

The Alhambra Theatre and Dining is “alive with The Sound of Music.” The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical follow the von Trapp family in 1938 shortly before the second world war in Austria. A new governess, Maria Rainer comes to the von Trapp family, bringing with her music and joy that has been lacking within the home since their mother passed away. The musical is filled with songs most audience members will recognize, such as “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” and “Do-Re-Mi.”

Running for three exclusive performances at Above the Stag as part of the NOT THE EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL, images of the opening night on Thursday 20th August have been released. 

Beck Center for the Arts has announced Broadway Bound, featuring Austin Pendleton in its first production of the 2021-2022 Professional Theater Season. Mr. Pendleton returns from New York City after having performed in a Beck Center prior production, Glen Garry, Glen Ross.    

With a mix of music old and new and a script written by Linnie Reedman, THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF HERSCHEL GRYNSPAN brings to life a story that has hitherto been confined to the backwaters of history. On the 7th of November 1938 a desperate 17-year-old Jewish refugee walked into the German Embassy in Paris and shot a German diplomat.

In addition to its six-play membership season, the Montgomery County institution returns with an equally busy schedule of concerts, special productions, presentations, and even more curated programming to build off of the success of its summer series: Olney Outdoors.

Arthur J. Peabody is a beautiful piece that centers around a very talkative and well traveled bird. It is the product of the imaginary mind of Amanda Dempsey- Laughlin. Who not only wrote this fantastical piece but has also taken on the role of Director and even Bearded Lady. This is not the first of this  writer's work, but this is the first to ever be performed On the Fringe Stage.

Cellist John-Henry Crawford has been named the NFMC 2021-2023 Young Artist in Strings. The NFMC's Biennial Young Artist Awards aim to promote outstanding, unrepresented young artists who are ready for a concert career. In addition to the $20,000 prize, two years of NFMC booking engagements with the national federated organizations are included.

Classical Theatre Company has announced the lineup for its  2021-2022 Mainstage Season. As the only professional theatre company in the State of Texas that solely produces classical drama on a year-round basis, CTC only produces plays that are 100 or more years old. 

On Thursday, June 24, I thoroughly enjoyed Rogers and Hammerstein’s THE SOUND OF MUSIC, performed by Fairfield Center Stage, under the open summer skies on a beautiful Fairfield evening, at Fairfield Museum Commons.  I always look forward to Fairfield Center Stage productions, because they take innovative and creative risks that always manage to pay off for them!  They consistently provide a unique set that is perfectly suited to whatever show they are performing, giving the audience a true experience that goes beyond merely showing us the setting; it draws us right into it, as if we are there!  In this case, the hills are truly alive, because we, as the audience, sit on the outdoor land upon which Maria sings “The Sound of Music,” while making her entrance, through the audience.  Betzabeth Castro is phenomenal in the role of Maria, right from the start, showing true enjoyment in her singing, truly selling every note, and every line, with a powerful singing voice and stage presence.

The Wanderer, the new Broadway-bound musical based on the life and music of Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famer Dion DiMucci, announced today that Michael Wartella (Wicked) will star as Dion alongside Christy Altomare (Anastasia) as Dion’s wife Susan and Joey McIntyre (New Kids on the Block; Waitress) as Dion’s right hand man, Johnny, in its world premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey.
