Don't let the show's overall over-the-top theatrics dissuade you from experiencing this visually-stunning, showstopper-filled production which continues at Segerstrom Center through October 1. A boisterous, grandiose spectacle of overtly expressed emotions and overtly belted show tunes, LES MISÉRABLES remains as amplified as it has always been.

Directed by Roy Alexander Weise, the project is structurally disruptive but ultimately too meandering and overlong. A narrator (Rochelle Rose) lays the tropes bare with bitter observations. She amplifies the intentional faux pas, but the framework gets a bit stodgy by the second round of narrative repetition.

Usually, when long-neglected works somehow find their way to the forefront, we find there’s a pretty good reason for the lack of interest. Happily for us, this does not apply to Donizetti’s POLIUTO, which Will Crutchfield’s Teatro Nuovo performed last weekend at Montclair State’s Kasser Theatre and on July 19th at Jazz from Lincoln Center’s Rose Theatre. This summer, Brooklyn Botanic Garden Presents Jean-Michel Othoniel: The Flowers Of Hypnosis, an exhibition of six new sculptures sited in three of BBG's best-known gardens. Othoniel's new sculptures for the Garden work on a landscape scale and are born of the artist's passion for and observations of nature and flowers. I’ve seen many productions of “Les Misérables” over the years, Dear Readers. I’ve seen local productions and tours. I’ve seen with the turntable and without. And, of course, I’ve seen good and not so good productions. And with all those viewings under my belt, I had to ask myself, “do I need to see it yet again?” And the answer I got last night was a resounding yes. When it’s a production as good as this one that can remind you how amazing the show is, you absolutely want to see it again.
