Review: ANNIE at Broadway San Jose
by Linda Hodges - Jan 13, 2023
What did our critic Linda Hodgesthink of ANNIE at Broadway San Jose? It's a hard knock life for sure, but Broadway San Jose's ANNIE infuses even today's troubled times with unrestrained optimism. And even though the sun isn't really shining in rain ravaged Northern California, it didn't stop the carloads of boys and girls and their adults from streaming into San Jose for the show.

by Chloe Rabinowitz - Dec 10, 2019
'I don't know what the hell that was, but I f*$&ing loved it!' --recent Poetry/Cabaret audience member In this “variety salon,” a multi-genre evening of emotional whiplash, the coffeehouse meets the cabaret as “Poetry/Cabaret” (Time Out NY-recommended) once again brings together poets and performers in a face-paced night of stimulating variations on a theme. The second episode of the season, “SEASONED”, billed as a “non-holiday holiday” show, explores a wide range of experiences associated with this time of year—Feeling spicy? Seen it all? Been through a few things? (Too) full of holiday cheer? Curator and host Thomas March (Aftermath) and the cast explore these and more, in song, poetry, comedy, and story. In addition to the host's comic monologue, the show will feature poetry from Tyler Mills and Thoughtress; comedy from Ashley Gavin; and music from Jen Kwok and Kat Liz Kramer. Drew Wutke will be on keys as musical director.
Review: Enjoy Celebrating the Arts at Several Festivals and THE PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS in Laguna Beach This Summer
by Shari Barrett - Jul 10, 2019
I have visited Laguna Beach for several consecutive summers, enjoying the vibrant arts scene by spending a full day wandering through THE SAWDUST FESTIVAL, THE LAGUNA ART A-FAIR, FESTIVAL OF ARTS and PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS, with all sites, including the Laguna Playhouse, within walking distance of each on the main street into the city. The beautiful coastal city has so much to offer in the way of fine dining, art galleries, shopping, theatre, beach activities, all accessible via a free shuttle service, it would easily make for a wonderful week-long family vacation site or a jam-packed day of celebrating the arts.

BWW Review: Spend a Day Filled with Artistic Delights at Art Festivals and THE PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS in Laguna Beach
by Shari Barrett - Jul 31, 2018
For the past several summers, I have attended the Festival of Arts and The Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. But this year, I also decided to also visit two other art festivals along Laguna Canyon Road rather than spend any time cruising the town as I had done before. The full-day of exploring all the artistic delights on display this year at all three locations left me dazzled by all the talent on display, while wishing I had lot of extra income to purchase and bring home many of the awe-inspiring items that caught my fancy. But the real highlight of the day was viewing the abundance of 'local color' on display in this summer's 'Under the Sun' themed Pageant of the Masters.
Review: Michael Arden Directs ANNIE with Creative Ingenuity at the Hollywood Bowl
by Shari Barrett - Jul 29, 2018
Even if you have seen it before, I cannot stress enough how miraculous the current production of ANNIE is at the Hollywood Bowl, directed with creative ingenuity by Michael Arden. Featured in the cast of incredibly talented triple-threat (acting, singing, dancing) performers are Ana Gasteyer as the ruthless headmistress Miss Agatha Hannigan, David Alan Grier as the refined, generous billionaire Oliver 'Daddy' Warbucks, Lea Salonga as his dedicated and caring assistant Grace Farrell, with newcomer Kaylin Hedges as Annie, who won the role over hundreds of other young girls from across the country who submitted video auditions to win role. Miss Hedges is the cornerstone of the production and her soaring, pitch-perfect voice and effervescent stage presence setting the jubilant tone for the entire ensemble.
