Buddy 1989

Sting will launch a new Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace beginning March 4, 2027, featuring performances with guitarist Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas. Tickets go on sale October 17.

Those worrying that Tilda Swinton — the patron saint of Sunday afternoon arthouse movies and performance art best experienced through reviews — has gone mainstream should make themselves a cup of chamomile tea and relax. There are likely very few famous actors (never mind Oscar winners) queuing up to spend their night daubed in white paint and standing alone for 80 minutes dressed in little more than a string vest and giant red y-fronts. There are, though, plenty of people eager to watch la Swinton: the London run has already sold out ahead of press night before, like a rock tour, the play heads to Edinburgh, Berlin and New York.

The current production at the Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace is Buddy: the Buddy Holly Story. It was the first of the jukebox musicals premiering in 1989.  It was conceived and written in England. It ran in London’s West End for 12 years. An interesting fact: Paul McCartney holds the copyright to Buddy’s music. He supported the idea and the show was produced.

Unlike most works of historical fiction, the vibes in this new dramedy are so good, you almost don't need the biographical tie-ins at all.

North Shore Music Theatre will produce Rent for the first time as part of its 70th Anniversary Season, running September 16–28, 2025. Directed and choreographed by Marcos Santana, the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical will feature a 20-member cast and Jonathan Larson’s iconic songs including “Seasons of Love.” Tickets are on sale now.

Put on your dancing shoes and join the cast and crew at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre for Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story through September 20th, 2025.

While the show wasn’t my cup of tea, others will probably really appreciate its content.  Tickets might make a good Mother’s Day gift for some. Your mileage may vary.  Playing now through May 18th.
