Optimist Theatre has announced the retirement of Ron Scot Fry, its Founding Artistic Director. Fry set the vision and mission of Optimist Theatre, from its founding as Midwest Children’s Theatre in 1993, through its evolution to producer of Shakespeare in the Park in 2010 to the post-pandemic return to live theater.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is one of ten of August Wilson's productions about the African American experience. Ma Rainey depicts the life of the famous blues singer, Gertrude 'Ma' Rainey, and Black Bottom is one of the songs she made famous. BNS Productions, based in Charlotte, NC, did an excellent job of bring this awesome work the the stage...with a twelve day running from August 11-22. It was sold-out many nights. So, as a result of its awesomeness, it is returning on September 12 for an encore performance.

Dominion Entertainment Group is excited to announce the return of its hit holiday musical, Black Nativity: A Gospel Christmas Musical Experience, directed by Robert John Connor, with musical direction by Keith Wilson, and choreographed by Dawn Axam. Dominion will return to the newly renovated Ferst Center for the Arts located on the campus of Georgia Tech for this years Atlanta run of this production.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, the only professional Black theater company on Florida's West Coast and one of only three in Florida, has received its first-ever grant from the Shubert Foundation. The funding in the amount of $10,000 will support WBTT's 2020-2021 performance season.

In celebration of Black History Month, Focus Features and Regal have partnered to offer free screenings of HARRIET in 50 theatres around the United States on Tuesday, February 4, and Tuesday, February 11.  The film depicts the life of one of history's most courageous African American heroes, Harriet Tubman, bringing her story to the big screen for the very first time. After a surge in Colorado's Coronavirus cases shut down many local businesses and forced the Aurora Fox to go virtual with their hotly anticipated holiday production of Langston Hughes' 'Black Nativity' at the end of last year, Aurora Fox Executive Producer Helen R. Murray made the decision to reschedule the latter half of Season 36 season.

Creative Cauldron will present its first production of 2020, Crowns, February 13 - March 8, written by Regina Taylor and adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Mayberry. When a Brooklyn teen goes to live in South Carolina after the death of her brother she learns the beauty, ceremony and symbolism of hat-wearing from her resilient, southern sisters. This musical draws from the roots of gospel music and traditions of greater African-American Diaspora to weave an inter-generational story of love, joy, and redemption. Crowns has played throughout the country to acclaim, including a sold out run at Arena Stage. Directed by Kara Tameika Watkins and Ian Anthony Coleman, with musical direction by Cedric Lyles. Crowns will be presented at Creative Cauldron, 410 S Maple Ave, Falls Church VA 22046 from February 13 to March 8. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 PM, Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 7:30 PM, and Sundays at 2:00 PM & 7:00 PM. Press night is Saturday, February 15th, 2020 at 7:30 PM.
