Remembrance - 2019 - Off-Broadway History , Info & More

Governor's Island Colonel's Row House 404B
10 South Street #7 New York, NY 10004

Remembrance is the story of a woman who is suffering from Alzheimer's. Part free, educational art installation and part ticketed, immersive show, this program will explore the fracturing memories of Margaret. Come discover her mind on your own time or help celebrate Margaret's 65th birthday as one of her close friends or family members. Either way, visitors will witness the process of forgetting and what happens when our minds are no longer our own.

Please be advised, at Margaret's birthday you will be required to stand, move around, and climb a flight of stairs at different times. Unfortunately her house is not wheelchair accessible. The party will last around an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how well you know Margaret. Her party does contain some difficult emotional content; we recommend the minimum age to come celebrate with her be 11 years old. However, anyone of any age is welcome to come visit her house and her mind during the free, open hours.

There will be a limited number of free invitations available to Margaret's birthday day of the party. These allow you to experience the first part of the celebration and they are on a first come, first served basis. Sign-up for these will begin at Margaret's house at 11am on any day that the party is taking place. To get to Margaret's house you will need to take the Governor's Island Ferry from the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan (right next to the Staten Island Ferry). The ferry ride takes approximately 8 mins. The ferry is $3 but if you choose to come to the island before noon, the ferry is free! Once you disembark, follow signs for Colonel's Row. Margaret's house is located at 404B and has an American flag out front.

There is a mandatory, free bag check that will be provided before you enter Margaret's home.

Photo Coverage: The 30th New York Cabaret Convention Concludes at Rose Theater
by Stephen Sorokoff - Nov 1, 2019

Cabaret lovers will have many memories from the Mabel Mercer Foundation's 2019 New York Cabaret Convention. Attendees to all four of the presentations at Rose Theater will no doubt have their favorite music moments from the performances of the more than 75 cabaret artists. However, perhaps the most enduring remembrance will be the remarkable organizational abilities and intelligence of the foundations artistic director, it's face (and hat) of the convention… KT Sullivan. Just imagine how difficult it must be to satisfy the requirements of 75 singers, make their moment in the spotlight as successful as it can be, and cope with the egos that are a necessary part of every performers DNA. All the while fulfilling the sophisticated and knowledgeable audience's expectations of a great show. There were many highs and “almost highs” during the 12 hours of music, and that's what makes it so exciting. Every artist brings their own unique talent to the stage.

BWW Review: Village's SPELLING BEE is a M-U-S-T S-E-E!
by Jay Irwin - Sep 14, 2019

Dear Readers, let's set the way-back machine to May of 2005 when a musical theater geek got to take his first trip to New York and see his first Broadway shows on Broadway. He sat there in Circle in the Square and marveled at a new William Finn show called a?oeThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Beea??. Now this was during its previews so not a lot of buzz on it yet, which made it even more special, as he got to experience its greatness as it unfolded. He laughed, he cried, he fell in love with this silly little show. Obviously that geek was me. Since then I've seen numerous productions here and abroad. The show is a staple of musical theaters as it's inevitably a winner. I wouldn't say it's bulletproof but it's bullet-resistant. As long as you have a decent cast that can have fun playing kids, you're good. But few have taken me back to that original moment and evoked the tears at the end or from one particular song a?? until now.
