Seattle Center Announces Free Summer Yoga and Tai Chi at International Fountain 6/1

By: May. 20, 2010

Seattle Center Summer Fitness, a lunchtime opportunity to stretch, breath, build muscle and develop balance, begins on June 1 with Tai Chi on Tuesdays and Yoga on Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., through August on the North International Fountain Lawn.

The Tuesday and Wednesday fitness sessions are free and open to all ages and experience levels, offering revitalization and exercise for neighborhood residents, families, downtown workers and out of town visitors. Seattle Center Productions presents the program in partnership with the Wallingford School of Oom Yung Doe and the Home Yoga and Wellness Center in lower Queen Anne.
Tai Chi is a form of Chinese exercise created to improve health and well-being. Movements are slow and graceful without using force or power. The speed of the breathing matches the speed of the movement. By improving the respiratory and circulatory systems, basic joint and muscle flexibility and overall muscle tone, Tai Chi helps to release stress that accrues in daily life.

The weekly Hatha Yoga class offers stretching, balancing and strengthening, mixed with fun. The practice of yoga, around for thousands of years, originally developed to keep the body strong and healthy so that practitioners would be able to sit for long periods of meditation. Individuals now participate in yoga to exercise, deal with stress, and heal injuries.

Seattle Center Productions, the programming arm of Seattle Center, provides the production experience and technical expertise to present nearly 500 free and affordable events and activities throughout the year. It partners with community organizations to produce their activities at Seattle Center facilities through Community Created Events, and works with ethnic organizations in the community to present the Seattle Center Festál series of 22 cultural celebrations.
