The North Carolina Symphony will hold the 2011 edition of its Education Concert Workshop for teachers at Meymandi Concert Hall in downtown Raleigh's Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, Aug. 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the organization announced today.

The workshop prepares teachers for the Symphony's upcoming season of free education concerts, presented at its home in Raleigh and in more than 25 North Carolina counties as the core of the most extensive education program of any U.S. orchestra; coverage of the Symphony's education concerts by John Dancy of WUNC-TV can be seen online.

The workshop provides demonstrations of suggested classroom activities, as well as presentations and performances by North Carolina Symphony staff and musicians. The authors of the 2011/12 student and teacher handbooks, all of whom are elementary school music specialists, will be available for questions and continued discussion. Attendees will also be the first to receive this year's handbooks and concert program information.

New this year, the workshop will be video recorded and posted online with supporting materials, allowing teachers across North Carolina unprecedented access to the educational resources of their state's premier professional orchestra.

"We want to provide the same professional support to all music teachers in the state as we do those who have the schedule and resources to attend our workshop in person," says Jessica Nalbone, North Carolina Symphony education manager.

Online-only participants will be able to view workshop demonstrations beginning in late August and have access to the Symphony education staff.

"With this exciting new initiative, we're exploring new opportunities in educational outreach and professional development," Nalbone says. "Teachers, especially those in rural areas, will have access to tools that were previously out of reach. This helps them meet their professional requirements and, I hope, opens up new avenues for engaging North Carolina students in music at an early age."

Teachers who attend the education concert workshop or take all online coursework will be eligible to receive 0.5 CEU credits with prior approval from their school district. The cost of registration for either in-person attendance or online access is $30. In-person attendees will be provided a certificate in their workshop materials, as well as lunch, refreshments and the opportunity to win door prizes.

To register for the workshop, complete the registration form at the Education Workshops and Professional Development section of the Symphony's Web site. For additional information, call 919.789.5461.
