Gallery Theater Presents THE TEMPEST, 2/18-3/12

Opening Friday, February 18 on the main stage is William Shakespeare's The Tempest. On the fourth of June 1609, a fleet of ships set sail from Plymouth (England) to strengthen the colony at Jamestown. On the 24th of July, in a tempest near Bermuda, one of the ships, the Sea Venture, carrying Secretary-to-be William Strachey, became separated from the rest and ran aground on the islands. Everyone on board survived. There, the crew and passengers stayed for 10 months while they built two new ships in which they completed their journey to Virginia in May, 1610.

Lakewood Theatre Company will present Oh, Coward!, a musical revue featuring the words, music and lyrics from Nöel Coward's work, on two weekends in February. Performances will be on Lakewood Theatre Company's Side Door stage, an intimate 90-seat cabaret-style theatre. Food, wine and other beverages will be available for purchase before and during the show.

Portland Center Stage will host the world premiere of Randy Johnson's One Night with Janis Joplin, the new musical event celebrating the life of one of rock 'n roll's greatest legends, beginning May 24, 2011. With close to completely sold out houses for the rest of the scheduled performances, Artists Repertory Theatre will extend Superior Donuts for four more shows: Wednesday-Saturday, February 9-12 at 7:30 pm. This is a limited extension due to actor availability and a production overlap with the opening of Artists Rep's intensive next show, The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh which starts preview performances February 8.

Cast Announced for Portland Center Stage's FUTURA

Imagine a world where the printed word is forbidden; it may by closer than you think. The first rehearsals for Jordan Harrison's cautionary tale Futura, directed by Kip Fagan, are now underway at Portland Center Stage. Futura begins previews on Tuesday, February 1, opens Friday, February 4, and runs Tuesday through Sunday until March 27. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m., with matinees at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and select Thursday matinees at noon. Tickets start at $30, with student and under-age-30 discounts available. Rush tickets are $20 each. With gaseous energy and outrageous jokes, the first rehearsals of The Imaginary Invalid at Portland Center Stage are underway, in a new adaptation by Constance Congdon of the classic comedy by Molière. The Imaginary Invalid previews on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, with opening night set for January 14, and performances through February 6. Performance times are Tuesday through Sunday, 7:30 pm, with matinees at 2:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, and some Thursday matinees at noon. Tickets start at $33 for full adult prices, with student and under age 30 discounts available. Rush tickets may be available for some performances at $20 each. Federico García Lorca is celebrated the world over for his poetry, music and plays. Yet at the age of 27, he was still a struggling artist living with his parents, staging puppet plays that were laughed off the stage by the critics. His need for freedom fueled his desire to succeed. In search of duende, his travels through New York and Cuba became a quest for cultural integration and gender acceptance. In the Americas, Lorca shined like a mad and fiery diamond, fusing his cante jondo with Afro-Cuban son to create a new rhythm of powerfully poetic drama.
