Lakewood Theatre Company Opens With THE SECRET GARDEN, 5/6

The Secret Garden, with stage direction by Kirk Mouser and musical direction by Alan D. Lytle, is the last show in Lakewood Theatre Company's 2011-12 season. The production opens May 6 and will continue through Sunday, June 12, 2011. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 PM, Sundays, at 7:00 PM (May 8, 15 and 22), and Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM (May 15, 22, 29, June 5 and 12). The show sponsor is The Richard & Janet Geary Foundation.

The theatre is located at Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St. in Lake Oswego. Tickets are $32.00 for adults and $29.00 for students and senior citizens. For reservations call 503-635-3901 or order online at www.lakewood-center.org.

The story: Nominated for the 1991 Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Score, The Secret Garden is based on the beloved children's book by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Orphaned in India, young Mary Lennox (Amber Mitchell) returns to England to live with her embittered, reclusive Uncle Archibald Craven (Bruce Blanchard) and his invalid son Colin (Everett Pearson) on his estate. Hidden within the grounds is a neglected garden, which beckons Mary with haunting melodies and spirits from the family's past. With the help of Martha (Malia Tippets), a chambermaid, Dickon (James Langston-Drake), a gardener and her cousin Colin, Mary works to bring the garden back to life. In time the garden's beauty and bounty are restored and the healing power of nature brings a new hope of forgiveness, love, and renewal.

Southard and Amanda Andersen.

Lakewood's production of The Secret Garden is directed by Kirk Mouser and musical direction is by Alan D. Lytle. The stage manager is Felix Kelsey, assistant stage managers are Domeka Parker and Robert Calkins, scenic design is by John Gerth, costume design is by Margaret Chapman, lighting design is by Kurt Herman, sound design is by Bombastic Sound. Wig design for the production is by Jane Holmes, technical director is Kurt Herman, properties are by Felix Kelsey dialect coach is Don Stewart Burns and the producer is Kay Vega.

The Secret Garden features Book and Lyrics by Marsha Norman and Music by Lucy Simon. The musical is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
