OSF Celebrates CultureFest 2014 This Weekend

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival's CultureFest will celebrate multiethnic heritage and the diverse work on the Festival's stages this weekend, September 11-14, 2014. Held every other year, among CultureFest's 2014 offerings are play readings and discussions, multicultural Green Shows and Spanish open-captioned performances of three plays.
EXILES Begins 9/30 at Artists Rep

Artists Rep will present the NW premiere of Exiles by famed film, theatre and television actor Carlos Lacamara. Artists Rep's Artistic Director Damaso Rodriguez, who is Cuban-American, will direct the first major production of Exiles since its critically acclaimed premiere in Los Angeles.

Their production of Wait Until Dark is based on a revised script by Jeffrey Hatcher that premiered in 2013. The original, by Frederick Knott, opened in 1966 and was set at that time; this version is backdated to the 1940s. The loot is slightly different, and there are a few four-letter words added to the text, but beyond these cosmetic touches the script is the same.

NWCT's 22nd Season of Plays opens with this energetic reboot featuring "the world's most famous detective." Recast as a young boarding school student, Sherlock Holmes (Andrew Fridae) quickly makes his mark on the Criterion Academy. Here he must befriend Watson (Mitchell Lenneville), navigate the twists and turns of school politics, and crack the case all while struggling to stay on the right side of the Headmaster (longtime NWCT performer and local comedian Kevin-Michael Moore). This world premiere adaptation is written by local playwright Jeff Sanders, who previously collaborated with NWCT on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Swiss Family Robinson. OSF to Present Luis Alfaro's ST. JUDE, 9/11

Luis Alfaro, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Playwright-in-Residence, will perform his autobiographical play St. Jude on September 11 at 8 p.m. in the Thomas Theatre as part of the Festival's four-day CultureFest celebration. The production is the final OSF Presents production of the season.

IT'S ALIVE! From Mel Brooks and the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation The Producers comes the new monster musical comedy Young Frankenstein, opening September 12 at Lakewood Theatre Company. Performances continue through October 19, 2014. Young Frankenstein features story by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Brooks. It is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Brooks, who has described it as his best film. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek at the cast below!

OSF Receives $125,000 Grant

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) has received a $125,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) to support the 2015 U.S. premiere of Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, a hugely popular play in China and Taiwanby Taiwanese playwright Stan Lai, who also translated the play to English and will direct at OSF.

Costume Designer Melissa Schlachtmeyer Passes Away at 41

Melissa Schlachtmeyer, a costume designer for theater, dance and opera, passed away Wednesday August 6th while traveling in Florence, Italy. She was 41. The cause was complications from breast cancer.
