When naming the great romantic couples of all time, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet are sure to top the list. Two teen actors prepare to step into these famous roles as Prime Stage Theatre presents the popular story from April 17- 25.
Jeremy Hois, a student at Mount Lebanon High School, and Jenna Lanz, a junior at North Allegheny, credit their fellow cast members and director for helping them meet the challenges of these well-known roles.
"I have learned so much from the people around me," said Lanz. "They are so supportive and encouraging."
Hois agrees. "I have enjoyed the other actors. They are excellent to work with-and quite humorous at time."
When asked about the challenges they face when creating such iconic characters, Hois replied, "The most challenging part of playing Romeo is the emotional stress he deals with...he finds love, gets married, kills two people and becomes so distraught after Juliet's supposed death-he commits
suicide."
Of Juliet, Lanz said, "Sometimes it can be very challenging to translate Shakespeare's poetic and sophisticated language...but I am surrounded by very talented adults and are always happy to answer any questions I have." In working with the language, Hois said, "All the acting directions are in the language, making it easy to deal with once the language is understood." Lanz also loves using Shakespeare's words. "I really enjoy the language."
Both are excited about how this production of the love story will be exciting for audiences of all ages to see come to life. Lanz enthusiastically points out, "It is a production that audience members will enjoy. The great sword fights, and ideas of branding, sun and moon tattoos, and an amazing set design bring a whole new level to the classical story."
