What did our critic think of HADESTOWN at National Arts Centre? Broadway Across Canada’s presentation of the Tony- and Grammy-award winning Hadestown, pulled into the National Arts Centre last night after a seven-week residency in Toronto.

Tony Award winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) and Molly Gordon (Booksmart) star in the original comedy Theater Camp as Amos and Rebecca-Diane – lifelong best friends and drama instructors at a rundown camp in upstate New York. The cast also features Patti Harrison, Nathan Lee Graham, Ayo Edebiri, Owen Thiele, Amy Sedaris, and more.

Hadestown, the winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards® including Best New Musical and the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album, will play limited engagements at two venues in the San Francisco Bay Area. Back by popular demand, Hadestown will perform at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre (1192 Market St.) from September 12–17, 2023 as part of BroadwaySF.

This weekend Theater Camp expanded to 10 markets/51 theaters, up from six locations in New York and LA opening weekend, taking in an estimated $266,000 for a per-screen average of $5.2k, according to Deadline.

Anaïs Mitchell, the Tony and Grammy-winning creator of Hadestown, performed with the touring cast at the show’s opening night curtain call. Hadestown had its Toronto premiere at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on July 7, 2023. Toronto performances run through August 20, 2023. Check out the video here!

Theater Camp had the highest grossing limited opening weekend for a Searchlight Pictures film since 2019 over the weekend. Theater Camp had the second-highest grossing weekend at AMC Lincoln Square and Alamo Brooklyn, following Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning. It stars Ben Platt, Molly Gordon, Noah Galvin, and more.
