The first museum exhibition of its kind, Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971 opens at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on August 21, 2022. It offers the public a chance to learn more about how Black performers and filmmakers have helped define cinema in the United States. The exhibition explores the achievements and challenges of both independent production and the studio system, from cinema’s infancy in the 1890s through the height of the civil rights movement. Regeneration features rarely seen excerpts of films restored by the Academy Film Archive, as well as other narrative films and documentaries; newsreels and home movies; photographs; scripts; drawings; costumes; equipment; posters; and historical materials, such as entrance tickets, note cards, and telegrams; along with augmented reality experiences (AR) designed specifically for the exhibition.

The highly anticipated Broadway revival of Funny Girl is beginning performances tonight, March 26, at the August Wilson Theatre, ahead of an official opening on April 24. Meet the cast bringing this iconic show back to the stage!

The Broadway at Birdland concert series was elated to present Jared Grimes, protegé of Wynton Marsalis, in an evening of high energy, non-stop, genre-fusing music and dance on the Birdland stage on Monday, February 24. The band included Mark Meadows, Anwar Marchall, Bret Puchir, Jonathan Michel, and Brent Birckhead.

Birdland Jazz Club and Birdland Theater are pleased to present the schedule for the month of February! At Birdland Jazz Club, catch the iconic Lionel Hampton Big Band Featuring Jason Marsalis, current GRAMMY nominee Catherine Russell, the Birdland debut of AGUAS Trio with Omar Sosa, Yilian Cañizares and Gustavo Ovalles, and iconic vocalist Jane Monheit. Internationally recognized trumpeter Rachel Therrien, the Seth Weaver Big Band, and The Voice contestant Melinda Rose Rodriguez will also be performing upstairs. 

Multi-talented artist Darrian Ford brings his celebration of the singer Sam Cooke to The Cutting Room for an exciting one-night only experience. Ford, along with the amazing horns of Brass Illusion, will bring Cooke's unparalleled mastery of Gospel, Pop, Jazz and Blues to life in THE COOKE BOOK: THE MUSIC OF SAM COOKE on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, on what would have been Cooke's 89th birthday. On Friday, November 22nd, 2019, Progressive Theater in Maplewood, NJ will host the 1st Annual Black & Blue Fundraising Gala at The Woodland: Great Hall from 6:00pm to 11:00pm.
