Review: BYE BYE BIRDIE at The 5th Avenue Theatre

Dear Readers, there are some shows that just hold a special place in your heart, even if they may not age as well as you hoped. Charles Strouse and Lee Adams’ classic “Bye Bye Birdie”, currently playing at the 5th Avenue Theatre, is one of those shows for me. I loved both movie versions, saw what I consider to be the quintessential production back in 1990 starring Tommy Tune and Ann Reinking. Hell, I’ve even done the show several years ago. So, I’m a little picky about it when I see it again, and while this current production doesn’t surpass my previous experiences (I doubt anything could), it was certainly a solid production with a lot of fun moments going for it.

Review: DIAGNOSIS, Finborough Theatre

You may not know Athena Stevens’s name, but you may remember her legal troubles: her allegations against Shakespeare's Globe of sexual abuse by a fellow actor and disability discrimination were widely reported in March this year. Now, after a period of what she terms “creative exile”, the Finborough playwright in residence is back with a stiflingly claustrophobic look at the disabled community’s relationship with the police, set entirely in a prison cell.

The 5th Avenue Theatre Company has announced its new production of Bye Bye Birdie, the Tony Award-winning musical that captures the spirit, style, and humor of 1960s America.

Critics' Choice: Christiana Rose's Best Children's Shows of 2024

In an evolving year of children’s theatre, the themes of climate change and sustainability reign supreme, with a lean towards immersive and inclusive theatre with excellent changes in the industry meaning prior access resources are provided as a matter of course. These resources are often made available in the form of helpful visual guides, sensory and symbol maps, all of which are brilliantly inclusive for those with neurodiversity or additional needs.

Review: DEAD HARD, COLAB Tower

If there was an award for the most art forms smooshed into one show, COLAB’s Dead Hard could be a winner. This blend of panto, comedy, immersive and drag is a satisfying mess that somehow (just) works.

Review: CHRISTMAS COMES TO MOOMINVALLEY, Jacksons Lane

Adapted from Tove Jansson’s short story The Fir Tree, the creative team at Jackson’s Lane have collaborated with organisation Moomin Characters and the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland, to produce a festive spectacle, concerned with wonder, discovery, joy and the pure kindness of giving.

LADY MACBETH UNCUT Comes to The Drayton Arms

Inspired by Gruoch, the real Lady Macbeth, Lady Macbeth Uncut reinterprets Shakespeare's 'fiend-like queen'. In this new play, Lady Macbeth is a victim of the patriarchy who draws on the power of women's alliances in the face of male violence.

Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas to Star in Musical Comedy from ONCE Director

Deadline has reported that Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas will appear in a new musical comedy from John Carney, director of Once and Sing Street. The film, titled Power Ballad, is said to tell 'the story of a wedding singer (Rudd), a rock star (Jonas), and the song that comes between them.' Pioneer Theatre Company to Present All-New Adaptation of Molière's SCAPIN in September

Pioneer Theatre Company will present Molière’s Scapin in an all-new adaptation by director Stephen Wrentmore. Wrentmore’s take on the 17th-century classic farce puts women at the forefront by changing the trouble-making servant Scapin into a female character. The production opens PTC’s 22/23 Season from September 16 through October 1.
