Review: I, JOAN at Shakespeare's Globe
by Paige Cochrane - Sep 2, 2022

Joan of Arc has long been a symbol of female empowerment. Her ascent to patron saint of France is often described as a tale of gender non-conforming rebellion for women to aspire to. Shakespeare's Globe and writer Charlie Josephine (they/he) have dismantled this depiction of womanhood, redefining Joan's experiences through the lens of trans existence. In I, Joan, the protagonist traverses the same war and faith we as an audience are accustomed to, whilst also advocating for and navigating their nonbinary identity.

BWW Review: HENRY VIII, Shakespeare's Globe
by Paige Cochrane - May 27, 2022

As the most notorious monarch in British history, Henry VIII's rule was tyrannous and imposing. Known for his colossal physique and consort of six unlucky wives, Henry Tudor has long stood as an example of the damage done by brutish men with excessive power. His reputation as a prolific abuser of women has inspired an array of assertive feminist theatre and this offering by Shakespeare's Globe is no exception.

BWW Review: ROMEO & JULIET, Globe Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Jul 10, 2021

Shakespeare is such a constant in the theatrical cannon that there is often a desire to do something innovative with his work. Reinventing the Bard can provoke an eye-roll or two and Director Ola Ince’s new version of Romeo & Juliet at the Globe will certainly divide audiences. Ince choses to show the play from the aspect of mental health issues; the couple choose to die because they are mentally afflicted, rather than because they are in love.

BWW Review: RADIO, Arcola Theatre
by Charlie Wilks - Jun 25, 2019

Adam Gillen is utterly compelling in Al Smith's tender tale of astronomy, discovery and space travel. Holding our attention for 85 minutes, he speaks with delicacy and is a delight to watch. Josh Roche directs with expert precision and the pieces simplicity is its greatest strength. This really is storytelling at its finest.

Guest Blog: Playwright Al Smith On Apollo 11 and RADIO
by Marianka Swain - Jun 13, 2019

When I was a kid, my dad used to hand my brother and me a pair of binoculars and take us out into the garden at night-time to look at the Moon. He had this stash of lunar maps that he'd brought back from America and he'd point at different bits of the Moon and show us where Apollo 11 landed, Apollo 12, Apollo 14 and so on. I felt bad for the lunar landers they'd left on the surface. I felt they must be so terribly lonely, preserved up there forever next to their abandoned flags.
