A lively contemporary rethinking of a classic Irish comedy.

Fiery, sharp, timely. Those are the words that first come to my mind after attending Solas Nua's production of Maz and Bricks. As a woman it is easily one of the most relatable pieces of theater in DC right now and the production seems to draw on the very energy of the protests taking place just down the street.

New dates have been announced for Solas Nua Presents Maz & Bricks, a contemporary Irish play exploring the humanity in the fight for reproductive rights, running June 9-26, 2022 at Atlas Performing Arts Center, Washington DC.

In a year when U.S. headlines are filled with news of increasingly restrictive reproductive rights legislation, and U.S. streets are filled with women protesting for rights they thought they'd won nearly 50 years ago, Solas Nua, the Washington DC-based contemporary Irish arts organization, will stage an Irish play that lands the political firecracker in the middle of a romance. Maz & Bricks will perform June 2-26 at Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE, Washington DC.

Theater J, the nation’s largest and most prominent Jewish theater and Solas Nua, Washington DC’s leading multidisciplinary Irish arts organization, have announced a co-commission of Irish Yiddishist Caraid O’Brien. O’Brien will translate and adapt Sholem Asch’s classic Yiddish play Rabbi Doctor Silver.

“We want people to put down that green beer and pick up real Irish culture and literature,” Rex Daugherty, Solas Nua’s Artistic Director of Theatre, says. “The arts are one of Ireland’s biggest exports, and its best work is happening now.”

Written by Jeremy Keith Hunter, a DC-based multidisciplinary artist, and John King, a theatre-maker from Dublin, Side-Walks is a “visual short story about finding yourself after a year of isolation” and is the culmination of a pandemic-long collaboration between the two playwrights and Solas Nua.

Solas Nua, the Washington D.C.-based contemporary Irish arts organization, has appointed Rex Daugherty as its full time Artistic Director of Theatre. This is a senior full-time position with responsibility for the leadership and management of the theatre program of Solas Nua. Mr. Daugherty, originally from Oklahoma City, has been an active member of Washington’s robust theatre scene for the past thirteen years. He became a company member with Solas Nua in 2008 during their sold-out, Off-Broadway run of Disco Pigs, and has been acting as theatre artistic director on a part-time basis since 2015.

The third online production in the series, and the second from Kennedy’s Alexander Plays, is a penetrating, seemingly straightforward tale of mid-20th century discrimination in academia, blended with unspeakable crime.
