Omar Sharif Biography

Omar Sharif was an Egyptian film and television actor. He began his career in his native country in the 1950s, but is best known for his appearances in both British and American productions. His films include Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Funny Girl (1968). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Lawrence of Arabia. He won three Golden Globe Awards and a César Award.

Sharif, who spoke Arabic, English, French, Spanish, Greek and Italian fluently, was often cast, in British and American films, as a foreigner of some sort. He bridled at travel restrictions imposed by the government of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, leading to self-exile in Europe. He was a lifelong horse racing enthusiast, and at one time ranked among the world's top contract bridge players.

BWW Review: THE BAND'S VISIT at The Fisher Theatre is a Love Letter to Middle Eastern Photo BWW Review: THE BAND'S VISIT at The Fisher Theatre is a Love Letter to Middle Eastern Music and Culture
by Stefani Chudnow - Apr 23, 2022

Now playing the Fisher Theatre through May 1st, recent Tony Award darling The Band's Visit is a musical with a lot of heart and a deeply ingrained mission to unify cultures, rather than divide. The genius of The Band's Visit lies not in flashy musical numbers or costumes, but in the honest (and modest) storytelling.

Even without dazzling special effects and spectacular theatrics, or histrionic high drama, THE BAND'S VISIT---the Tony Award-winning stage musical now on stage at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through April 3---still provides a powerful show that is quietly poetic in its precious, slow-burning delivery.

Stage fright made life difficult for many artists, even the best virtuosos were not free from it, it also destroyed many great talents. Kenneth MacMillan began his ballet career as a dancer at Sadler's Wells Ballet in London, where he was predicted a bright future, but stage fright cut his wings. He gave up dancing and a great choreographer was born, the creator of 10 full-length ballets and over 50 one-act plays with original choreography.

Dear Readers, I want to tell you a story about a show. You probably never heard of it because it‚Äôs not very important. Wait! No, it is important, and you should have heard of it. At least since the show in question is the winner of 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, ‚ÄúThe Band‚Äôs Visit‚ÄĚ, currently playing at the Paramount Theatre. Travelling productions do not come more lauded than The Band's Visit, winner of ten Tony Awards including best musical and a 2019 Grammy for best musical theater album. This is not your typical musical with hummable showtunes and slick choreography, rather an intimate, tranquil story that unfolds beautifully with little narrative bang. David Yasbek's lovely ethnic score transports us to Israel's isolated Negev desert where an unlikely meeting of longtime neighboring enemies, Arab and Israeli, unfolds without any politics or anger.
