Melissa O'Neil began her professional career in 2005 as a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol. She won the competition on Sept. 14, 2005, becoming the show's third winner. Following her victory, she signed with Sony BMG Canada and released her debut single, "Alive," in 2005. The song reached No. 1 on the Canadian singles chart. Her self-titled debut album was released in 2005, followed by the singles "Let It Go" and "Speechless." She embarked on the Let It Go Tour in 2006 and received a Juno Award nomination for New Artist of the Year in 2007. In 2009, she became the lead vocalist for the Toronto funk band God Made Me Funky.


O'Neil began working in musical theater with productions including Dirty Dancing and High School Musical On Stage. In 2011, she made her Stratford Shakespeare Festival debut in Jesus Christ Superstar, playing Martha/Maid by the Fire. In 2012, she made her Broadway debut in Jesus Christ Superstar, playing Martha and Maid by the Fire while understudying Mary Magdalene. In 2013, she played Éponine in Les Misérables in Toronto, a role for which she won a Dora Award for Outstanding Female Performance. She returned to Broadway in 2014 as a member of the ensemble in Les Misérables, understudying Éponine and Fantine.

O'Neil began her television acting career in 2015 with recurring roles in This Life, Rogue and the musical drama web series Lost Generation. From 2015 to 2017, she starred as Two/Rebecca/Portia Lin in the Syfy space opera series Dark Matter.

In 2018, O'Neil played Suki in iZombie and had a recurring role in the thriller series Condor. Later that year, she was cast as LAPD Officer Lucy Chen in the ABC police drama The Rookie.
