We are excited to partner with Jeffrey Duban's Aegean Arts in presenting the poetry of the ancient Greek love poet Sappho (7th– 6th centuries BC) set to lush, sensuous music. As antiquity considered Homer "The Poet," it considered Sappho "The Poetess." This exquisite concert features a rarely performed setting of Sappho's verse by Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1964), a contemporary of Sir Edward Elgar. Originally scored for orchestra, the work is here played by Eri Nakamura in a rare piano transcription by an anonymous author. The concert experience will feature Sappho's poetry recited by our narrator, Jeffrey Duban, in Sappho’s original Aeolic dialect. Come and experience the poetry, the lush mezzo intonations of Kirsten Kane, and the consummate execution of a richly Wagnerian piano transcription, all set to evocative Sapphic texts in English composed by Bantock’s poet wife, Helen.
Jeffrey is also the author of The Lesbian Lyre: Reclaiming Sappho for the 21st Century. This concert, performed six times since its October 2014 premiere, now marks the launch of Jeffrey’s splendid publishing achievement, and we are proud to present, as part of our recital, complimentary copies to ticket-purchasing audience members. A reception and a book signing will follow the concert. Not to be missed!
