Playwrights Theatre is pleased to announce the winners of the 27th Annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest. From the over 350 plays submitted by young writers throughout the state, a panel of theatre professionals has selected four High School plays, four Junior High School plays and four Elementary Schools plays. The 27th Annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest Festival will be held on May 17 and May 18 as part of a partnership between Playwrights Theatre and Premiere Stages at Kean University.

The plays will be presented at the University Center's Little Theatre at Kean University on Monday, May 17 at 10am for the Elementary and Junior High Division winners and on Tuesday, May 18 at 10 am for the High School Division winners' plays. The readings will feature professional actors and directors and reservations can be made by calling Jim DeVivo at 973-514-1787 X14 or via email njypf@ptnj.org. Admission to the readings is free, but reservations are required, as seating is limited.

"We have quite an eclectic group of plays to present this year, full of imagination and critical thinking," said Jim DeVivo, Director of Education. "I am encouraged by the playwrights' eagerness to engage in revisions based on the suggestions of the Festival readers and selection committee. We all look forward to the continued development of the plays throughout the Festival process."

In the High School Division (grades 10-12), the winners are Steven Maier, an 11th grade student from Bergen County Academies in Hackensack for his play Final Draft. The Governor's Award is the highest honor in arts education in New Jersey.

"We are very proud of the work of these students. In these times of shrinking arts budgets and programming, this should be a reminder to policy-makers that the arts play a crucial and active role in the lives of these students," said John Pietrowski, Artistic Director. "More than 350 students in the state wrote plays this year, and we're here to celebrate and applaud that effort."
