Icons of American Ballet celebrates the genius of three towering figures who helped define American dance. The program opens with George Balanchine’s Serenade, a sweeping, lyrical masterpiece set to Tchaikovsky’s lush Serenade for Strings, performed live by the New Jersey Symphony. Jerome Robbins’ In the Night follows, a tender and nuanced portrayal of three romantic relationships, set to Chopin nocturnes performed live on piano. The evening concludes with Twyla Tharp’s glamorous and witty Nine Sinatra Songs, where couples dance through the highs and lows of love to the unforgettable voice of Frank Sinatra. With live music and three masterworks of 20th-century ballet, this program offers an unforgettable journey through the elegance, emotion, and innovation of American ballet.
