BWW Review: MACBETH at Commonwealth Theatre Center
by Keith Waits - May 20, 2019
I remember studying the Scottish play during my junior year in high school. The themes of unchecked ambition and the question of power in gender roles are significant, weighty topics for anyone, let alone teenagers. I'm happy to report that the cast of Macbeth, as part of the Young American Shakespeare Festival at Commonwealth Theatre Center, is more than up to the task.
BWW Review: HIT THE WALL at Pandora Productions
by Keith Waits - May 20, 2019
That the 1969 riots at the center of Ike Holter's play are identified as 'Stonewall' is a neat metaphorical turn of phrase, even if it is happenstance. It is the turning point for Gays emerging from the shadows and staking a claim for a rightful place in society. And the walls came tumbling down.
BWW Review: THE WINTER'S TALE at Commonwealth Theatre Center
by Keith Waits - May 20, 2019
It was not too long ago that Commonwealth Theatre Center completed the Shakespeare canon of plays. Assuredly, because of the scope and volume of The Bard's works, it doesn't surprise me that it has been a little while since director Charlie Sexton had last brought this fairy tale to life.
BWW Review: HENRY V at Commonwealth Theatre Center
by Keith Waits - May 20, 2019
Is Henry V the most accessible of William Shakespeare's History plays? There is a good argument for Richard III, but whatever the political underpinnings of any individual production, King Henry is heroic but complex; the man we want to be.
BWW Review: HELLO, DOLLY! at PNC Broadway In Louisville
by Keith Waits - May 20, 2019
Yonkers and Harmonia Gardens swept into town on Tuesday evening to a packed Whitney Hall. This exuberant and big-hearted production of Hello Dolly! leans into its mid-20th origins, with nods to the period staging of the 1880s, while also exploding into the present with contemporary color palettes.

BWW Review: HELLO, DOLLY! at Kentucky Center For The Arts
by Taylor Clemons - May 15, 2019
Hello, Dolly! is a true american classic, and is treated by some as the perfect musical comedy. Like many associate Ethel Merman with Gypsy or Anything Goes, the hand prints of the late great Carol Channing are forever integrated into Hello, Dolly's legacy. In 2017 it was announced that the show would return to Broadway starring none other than Bette Midler, a worthy successor to Carol Channing. In the Broadway run of this Tony Award winning revival audiences were treated to performances from such greats as Bernadette Peters and Donna Murphy. The trend of star power associated with this revival continues ten-fold with the one and only Broadway legend Betty Buckley taking her turn in the iconic red feathers.

Beatles Vs. Stones Show Comes To Duke Energy Center
by BWW News Desk - April 22, 2019
For decades, the battle has raged: Beatles or Stones? Through their heyday, fans accused London's Rolling Stones of stealing ideas -- even entire albums - from their Liverpool counterparts. At the same time, the Beatles secretly envied the Stones' "bad boy" image and attitude, often copying their style. Both bands are unmistakably great, scoring an array of hits that changed musical history, but only one can be the best. The most infamous rivalry in rock and roll never played out in a public arena until now as Beatles vs. Stones - A Musical Showdown performs at the Duke Energy Center on Tuesday, May 7 at 7:30 pm. The show is appropriate for all ages. The Durham Jordan High School String Quartet will have the privilege of joining the professional musicians on stage to add some orchestral texture to the evening.
BWW Review: NEWSIES at Derby Dinner Playhouse
by Keith Waits - April 22, 2019
Way back in those days of yesteryear, the early 1990's, Jeffrey Katzenberg was celebrating his success. He had almost single-handedly guided the Walt Disney animation studio back to glory after decades of reduced returns, and he had the bright idea to try to do the same to the live-action movie musical.
BWW Review: NEWSIES at Derby Dinner Playhouse
by Taylor Clemons - April 17, 2019
Within the world of Disney Theatricals, I would argue that Newsies is one of their finest and more unique offerings. As many know, the musical version of Newsies is based on the original movie of the same name which was originally released in 1992. Like many Disney properties, the theatrical division decided to play with the idea of adapting it for the stage. It was originally intended to be a one off production to be sent into licensing (sense then musical adaptions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Freaky Friday have done just that). However, the house of mouse saw something special in this particular adaptation and took the big step of mounting a full scale Broadway production. The rest is history. Newsies is now more popular than it ever was, it has forged its way out of being a cult classic, and is now cemented in the main stream.

BWW Review: DOGFIGHT at Acting Against Cancer
by Keith Waits - April 12, 2019
Some Kinda There are iconic musicals that always seem to pop on some local company's schedule on a regular basis, but what of the lesser known shows that don't enjoy quite the same level of success?
BWW Review: WOMEN ALONE EATING SALAD at Theatre [502]
by Keith Waits - April 12, 2019
From the title and social media promotions, I had expected Sheila Callaghan's play to maybe be a light-hearted feminist comedy. I was not at all prepared for the dark, mercurial waters I found myself in. It asks a lot of the audience but rewards you with fresh, cogent theatre that might change the way you think. It seems both totally radical and curiously appropriate that the play was inspired by a popular series of memes. I was not aware of them, but the Internet assures me this is true.
HIT THE WALL Comes to Pandora Productions
by BWW News Desk - April 09, 2019
As the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots approaches, Pandora Productions is proud to present Ike Holter's HIT THE WALL. An homage to the beginning of a movement! The play follows the stories of regular people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. We must never forget that the courage of a few have made a difference for all. Fed up with harassment by the police, the denizens of the Stonewall Inn fight back! It's the early hours of June 28, 1969 when a routine police raid on The Stonewall Inn, a popular underground gay bar in Greenwich Village, sparks a full-scale riot. Violent protests and street demonstrations continued for the next several days in what became known as The Stonewall Riots, thrusting a group of unlikely revolution-aries onto the frontlines of history and igniting one of the most influential social and political movements of the 20th Century. HIT THE WALL focuses on that wild and enigmatic first night of the riots, placing the audience just on the periphery of the conflict. An imaginative blend of history and mythology, it shines a contemporary light on the legacy of Stonewall.
BWW Review: SMART PEOPLE at The Liminal Playhouse
by Keith Waits - April 01, 2019
Americans talk about racial and cultural identity as if walking on eggshells. As with so many hot button issues in the 21stcentury, we have become polarized on these topics because it is easier to lean completely into a position rather than explore the gray territory of nuance and contradiction. In her play Smart People, Lydia R. Diamond is intent on having a conversation that, if it doesn't entirely resist cliche and stereotype, at least uses them as devices to trigger a messier, more complex dialogue.
BWW Review: DOGFIGHT at Acting Against Cancer
by Taylor Clemons - March 31, 2019
A wonderful score in an early work by Pasek and Paul takes center stage in DOGFIGHT.
