The Consul, The Tramp, and America’s Sweetheart at Art in the Park

On the eve of World War II, the German consul to Hollywood tries to stop production on Charlie Chaplin’s first talkie, The Great Dictator. The result is a comedy based on a true story about the powers of art, politics, commerce, and what it means to be American. Winner of the 2015 Julie Harris Playwright Award Competition and the 2015 Dayton Playhouse FutureFest.  

John Morogiello is the founding Artistic Director of Best Medicine Rep Theater Company.  His plays have been produced off-Broadway, internationally, and at some of America’s premier regional theaters, including Old Globe, Actors Theatre of Louisville, New Jersey Rep, and American Players Theatre.  Titles include Engaging Shaw, Blame It On Beckett, In the Gutter, and Play Date.  Awards include:  Dayton ‍Playhouse ‍Futurefest, ‍Julie ‍Harris ‍Playwright ‍Award, ‍Boomerang ‍Fund ‍for ‍Artists ‍Grant, ‍The ‍Kennedy ‍Center ‍Fellowship ‍of ‍the ‍Americas, ‍Holland ‍New ‍Voices ‍Playwright ‍Award ‍(Great ‍Plains ‍Theatre ‍Conference), ‍Mountain ‍Playhouse ‍International ‍Comedy ‍Playwriting ‍Award, ‍and ‍Baltimore ‍Magazine’s ‍“Best ‍Up ‍and ‍Coming ‍Playwright.”

Thorne Street Parlour operates under the auspices of the Highland Park Heritage Trust and with a generous grant from the City of Hermon Neighborhood Council. Art in the Park is a Public/Private Partnership Arts Facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). This production is being presented under the auspices of the Actors’ EquityAssociation Los Angeles Self-Produced Project Code.
