‘I have composed too much,’ wrote Dvo?ák. ‘You do write a bit hastily,’ replied Brahms – an incongruous pair: Brahms, the North German Protestant and freethinker, a city-dweller and confirmed bachelor; Dvo?ák, devoutly Roman Catholic Bohemian, a child of nature and model family man. Yet these two composers were the closest of friends and tonight we have two great favourites: Brahms’ Olympian violin concerto and Dvo?ák’s wild, Bohemian Symphony No. 8; plus Chilean folk dances fired in the forge of the modern orchestra: Zamora’s Sikuris opens the celebrations.
