Popical Island is a small, hard-working pop collective based in Dublin. Self described as “a bunch of nerds who like to play music together”.
Formed by the bands Land Lovers, Yeh Deadlies and Groom in 2010, it also is home to some of Ireland’s most exciting pop bands, including No Monster Club, So Cow, Squarehead, Capital Trid and Pantone 247. Having released a compilation, Popical Island #1, in June 2010, the collective has since gone on to start a monthly club night, Popicalia, as well as numerous gigs in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast. In addition, Popical Island has put out new releases by Yeh Deadlies, Groom, Walpurgis Family, and Jonny Fun and the …Hesitations.
This February the Popicals bring their sunny island to Cork with three of their extensive line-up! Tieranniesaur, Squarehead and Land Lovers will take no prisoners when they invade on Saturday 11th February!
Catch Tieranniesaur before they’re extinct!
Be there or be Square(head)!
For Lovers of Land or sea!
TIERANNIESAUR
Tieranniesaur is a home recording project for husband and wife duo Annie Tierney and Padraig O’Reilly. A genre straddling troupe that’s part old school Disco, part Afro-Pop and part New-Wave, they come on with an irresistible mix of sincerity and Hip-Pop grandstanding, with a true beating heart and emotional resonance at their core. These are songs that celebrate the good times while never losing sight of the ultimately ephemeral nature of all relationships
“Funky like a New York City block party… one of the best Irish acts doing the pop thing at the moment.“Jim Carroll, Irish Times.
“Hot damn. The funkiest and most fun set at the Picnic….Tieranniesaur are one hot rock-blocking live prospect.” Nialler9
“There ain’t no party like a Tieranniesaur party” Elaine Buckley, State Magazine

SQUAREHEAD
A mix of surf-pop harmonies, old school rock ‘n’ roll rhythms and guitar jangles, Squarehead draw inspiration from the melodies of The Beach Boys and Portland’s The Wipers. The album, results in a modern take on classic pop where lyrics about girls and good-time sentiments combine with singalong hooks to produce something fresh and exuberant away from classic pop pastiche.
“ .... Came good on the early promise of the trio’s live performances, it shook Dublin’s garage-rock scene till it was dizzy and then hugged it back to health ……shoulder to shoulder with Weezer’s finest moments” – The Irish Times

LAND LOVERS
Land Lovers have notions on being a pop band. They certainly play melodic enough songs with snappy words and some foot-tapping beats. They come from the tail-end of 2008, where they are about to release debut lo-fi homespun album Romance Romance. They have arrived here in 2011 with another, glossier album, Confidants, some way towards completion.
“uncommonly smart pop…fresh melodies engage first, then fantastic lyrics kick in…achingly sweet…the wonderful, self conscious love song The Black Country easily lives up to the standard of Back on the Chain Gang, from which it borrows its opening riff…perfectly formed collection. 4/5” - The Irish Times
“Beautiful guitar hooks, the production is near perfect for what is essentially a home recording - 4/5” - The Sunday Tribune
