The Columbus Symphony To Hold Benefit Concert

In a splendid, one-night-only event, The Columbus Symphony Cares About Kids Concert will feature Music Director Rossen Milanov and Assistant Conductor Andr s Lopera leading the Columbus Symphony in a special performance to benefit the organization's education programs. In addition to a spectacular program that includes works by Copland, Mozart, Joan Tower, Tchaikovsky, and more, Concertmaster Joanna Frankel will be featured in Massenet's M ditation intermezzo from his opera Tha s, members of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform side-by-side with the orchestra in Chabrier's Espa a, and the evening will conclude with Maestro Milanov conducting Ravel's magnificent Bol ro. Milanov, Lopera, and the CSO musicians have volunteered to perform unpaid, lowering the hard cost of the concert and thereby increasing the donation to the youth education initiatives.

There are the three little maids from school, a wandering minstrel, a hilariously corrupt public official, and a Lord High Executioner with a list of offenders deserving of his services, including himself-for flirting!

Columbus is going to get the axe this Valentine's day weekend as Bloody Good Productions Theatre Company presents its premiere production, LIZZIE by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer (music and lyrics), Tim Maner (book, lyrics, and additional music), and Alan Stevens Hewitt (music, additional lyrics, and orchestrations).  This production marks the Columbus premiere of LIZZIE.

Once in every decade or so, a musical is created that redefines the genre. Lin-Manuel Miranda's HAMILTON joins that elite Parthenon of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, LES MISERABLE and RENT. The two-act musical rolled into the Ohio Theatre (39 East State Street in downtown Columbus) on Jan. 29 pulling a 400-boxcar train of hype it couldn't possibly live up to.

ProMusica Opera Columbus Presents THE FLOOD

Opera Columbus and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra are partnering to co-produce and co-commission a new chamber opera titled The Flood - a story of loss, human tragedy and redemption set in Columbus. The work represents the first collaboration between the two arts organizations, as well as ProMusica's 67th commissioned work and Opera Columbus' first commission of a new mainstage opera in nearly 20 years.

Established in 1969, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) turns 50 and will mark the important milestone with a new look and a year-long, community celebration. Through the generous support of the American Electric Power Foundation and Nationwide, with special support provided by Huntington Bank, a series of special events will be held throughout the year to thank the community for its 50 years of enthusiastic support of CAPA and the arts in Columbus. Established in 1969 to save downtown's historic Ohio Theatre from imminent demolition, CAPA has since grown into a $21 million non-profit performing arts organization that stewards ten central Ohio entertainment venues, provides administrative services to seven local arts and culture organizations, presents more than 60 national touring artists each season, presents Broadway in Columbus (in partnership with Broadway Across America), produces Festival Latino, and creates educational performing arts experiences for thousands of students each year.

CSO to Perform Its Fiery SPANISH FLAMENCO FESTIVAL at the Palace Theatre March

In a concert inspired by adventure and Spanish exoticism, the Columbus Symphony will perform the Spanish Flamenco Festival at the newly renovated Palace Theatre on March 1 and 2. The auditorium of the 1926 historic venue received a six-month, $2.5 million facelift, and was reopened to the public in November 2018. Guest conducted by John Axelrod, musical director of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, the program will feature local flamenco star Griset Damas and the Flamenco Company of Columbus. The full program includes Turina's Danzas fantasticas, Falla's La Vida Breve: Danse Espagnole No. 1, and concludes with the enchanting, rhythmic vitality of Dvo?ak's richly melodic New World Symphony (Symphony No. 9).

On Wednesday, January 23, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA), in partnership with The Columbus Foundation, held its first-ever Poetry Slam competition, crowning Playon Patrick in the youth category (18 and under) and Tyiesha Radford Shorts in the adult category (19+). Each was awarded a pair of tickets to attend the Broadway musical HAMILTON during its Columbus engagement.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. Based on the Emmy-winning PBS Kids show "PEG + CAT," this totally awesome musical features wild comedy, countless favorite songs from the show, and Peg's super coolest pal Ramone. When Peg's mom asks Peg and Cat to mail some really important letters, they come face to face with a really big dog. To solve it, they'll need math-bar graphs, size comparison, position words, fair sharing, and a whole lot of counting. They'll also need to count on each other, and the audience too, for their problem to be solved.

As part of the CSO's Concerts for Kids series, Assistant Conductor Andres Lopera will lead the Columbus Symphony in "Fairytales & Dragons," a special one-hour concert for kids aged 2-10. 10 Local High Schools Selected To Participate In First-Ever CAPA MARQUEE AWARDS Program

The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) today announced the 10 local high schools selected to participate in the first-ever CAPA Marquee Awards. Designed to recognize and celebrate the wealth of high-caliber musical theatre talent in central Ohio, the newly created awards program will send adjudicators to a performance of each participating school's qualifying musical theatre production to evaluate nominated students/productions in the categories of Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Musical Production, Best Direction, Outstanding Ensemble Performance, and Outstanding Student Orchestra Performance. Adjudicators will also separately evalute hard-copy nominations submitted in the categories of Backstage Excellence and Outstanding Technical Achievement.
HAMILTON Announces #HAM4HAM Lottery In Columbus

Producer Jeffrey Seller, the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA), and Broadway in Columbus (BIC) today announced a digital lottery for HAMILTON tickets that will begin with the show's first performance on Tuesday, January 29, at the Ohio Theatre. Forty (40) tickets will be sold for every performance at $10 each. The digital lottery will open at 11:00 am EST on Sunday, January 27, for tickets to the Tuesday, January 29, performance. Subsequent digital lotteries will begin two days prior to each performance. HAMILTON runs January 29-February 17 at the Ohio Theatre.

Anointed "South Africa's cultural ambassadors to the world" by Nelson Mandela, five-time Grammy Award-winning a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with their uplifting vocal harmonies, signature dance moves, and charming onstage banter for more than 50 years. Since the world discovered their powerful vocals in Paul Simon's 1986 album, Graceland, the original members have welcomed a younger generation of singers into the group to pass along the tradition of storytelling and help spread their message of peace, love, and harmony.
