The Listeners at Lyric Opera of Chicago

The Listeners is a new opera by Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek, set to premiere at the Lyric Opera of Chicago from March 30 to April 11, 2025. Centered around a school teacher named Claire, portrayed by Nicole Heaston, whose life is disrupted by a mysterious droning sound, the opera explores themes of isolation and community as a group of "listeners" forms around her. Conducted by Enrique Mazzola and directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, this production integrates innovative videography and immersive storytelling techniques. Joining Heaston are Kyle Ketelsen as Howard, Claire's obsessive group leader, and rising-star soprano Jasmine Habersham as Ashley, Claire’s daughter.
