Greenwich Village Orchestra Announces 2019-2020 Season Concerts

The Greenwich Village Orchestra (GVO) announces its 2019–2020 season concerts, led by Music Director Barbara Yahr. Now in its 33rd season, the GVO is committed to making music at the highest possible level and enriching the lives of both players and audience through emotionally charged, exhilarating performances. All concerts of the 2019–2020 season will take place at All Saints Church, 230 East 60th Street, Manhattan, unless otherwise noted.
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Names Kyle Mustain As Principal English Horn

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Manfred Honeck are pleased to announce the appointment of Kyle Mustain to the position of Principal English Horn. Mustain will assume the post in early September for the start of the 2019/2020 season. He comes to Pittsburgh from the Oregon Symphony where he has served in the same position since 2010.

In an unprecedented jury decision, the Marmen Quartet from the UK comprised of Johannes Marmen (violin), Bryony Gibson-Cornish (violist), Steffan Morris (cellist) and Ricky Gore (violin) together with the Viano String Quartet from Canada/USA comprised of Lucy Wang (violin), Hao Zhou (violin), Aiden Kane (viola), Tate Zawadiuk (cello) have won one of the most coveted prizes in chamber music at the 13th Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC) at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

André Raphel Conducts New Recording Of Uri Caine's 'The Passion Of Octavius Catto' Available August 30

Uri Caine's ten-part oratorio, “The Passion of Octavius Catto,” conducted by André Raphel, will be released on August 30 on 816 Music.  This enthralling work combining classical, gospel, jazz and pop styles, features a jazz trio, a 37-piece chamber orchestra, a 32-member gospel choir and vocalist Barbara Walker.  The work was recorded on August 22 and 23, 2018, at the DiMenna Center in New York City.
Verdi Treasures from Milan's Ricordi Archive Make U.S. Debut

Rare testimonies to the history of Italian opera from the Milan-based, Bertelsmann-owned Ricordi Archive will now be shown in the United States for the first time. Fans of classical music and literature can look forward to the exhibition “Verdi: Creating Otello and Falstaff – Highlights from the Ricordi Archive”, which will be on view at the renowned Morgan Library & Museum in New York from September 6, 2019 to January 5, 2020.
Jim James Announces Collaborative Project With The Louisville Orchestra

Jim James, acclaimed genre-bending solo artist, passionate social activist and leader of legendary rock band My Morning Jacket, and conductor/composer Teddy Abrams & The Louisville Orchestra announce the release of their collaborative project, The Order of Nature. As two of the world's most vibrant and versatile musicians, neither James nor Abrams shies away from a challenge, and with ​The Order of Nature​ they've crafted a large-scale symphonic suite that has James' evocative songs as its foundation. Abrams built a grand orchestral house on that foundation, and the result is an explosion of music that boldly synthesizes rock and classical while taking advantage of orchestral music's inherently cinematic nature. Featuring unreleased new songs from James as well as re-imaginings from his solo catalog, the album will be released October 18 via Decca Gold. The lead track, “Set It To Song,” is available now with all pre-orders.

Last October, composer Patrick Grant released brand new recordings of pivotal works from his catalog in an album called 'Fields Amaze and other sTRANGE music.' In recent years Grant has garnered much praise and attention for his creating the project Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars, so the release of 'Fields Amaze...' was a way to (re)introduce listeners to the large body of work he has created for concert, dance, and theater. Well, it worked.
