The play, Ellens Boys, by Braintree playwright Jim Sullivan, focuses on the Flaherty family, living in their Dorchester double decker, in 1965. Ellen, a widow who has raised six children on her own, must learn to accept the changing times and her aging childrens embrace of the future. Her youngest, Gil, now in his thirties, still lives at home and struggles to come to terms with his sexuality in the face of his staunch Irish, catholic upbringing, and his mothers attempts to marry him off. We follow the Flaherty family through a tumultuous year of upheaval in which no secrets are safe, no boundaries are respected, and only their love for one another, and their sense of humor, can save them. Anyone with Irish relations or friends will recognize this family, says Victoria Bond, who plays Ellen. They mean well, and they act out of love, and they are beautifully imperfect and impossibly strong. Paul Noonan, Associate Artistic Director who plays the eldest son, John, adds, Audiences will identify with the Flaherty family, theyre iconic. True Rep is thrilled to premiere this work and provide a venue for a local voice to be heard. The playwright, Jim Sullivan, who has been writing plays for 30 years, says, I am humbled by the work True Rep is putting into my play, and thrilled by the level of talent they are bringing to this production. I hope that audiences will connect with these characters and that the play will entertain and move them.Ellens Boys will perform at The Beal House, 222 Main St. in Kingston on March 18, 19, 25 and 26, at 8:00PM, and March 20 and 27, at 3:00PM.
