The 2021 London production starring Sutton Foster will be shown on "PBS Great Performances" beginning May 13th and later dates.  At least where I live.

Wonderful!

Yes!!!  I’m surprised it wasn’t put out as an initial theatrical release in the states.  Can’t wait to see it!  Sutton is the definitive Sweeney.

I’ve seen both and easily prefer Sutton.

I saw this before, she’s just as excellent in this role. At some points I thought of how I preferred her a decade ago, but there’s the trade off of her being even better in other spots.

The rest of the cast is also good, but all of them were weaker than their Broadway counterparts except for Robert Lindsay and Carly Mercedes Dyer (though I still did very much enjoy Haydn Oakley).

I’m not as into Dyer’s portrayal as others were, but she’s a definite improvement on Jessica Stone’s take, which was solid but bland. Robert Lindsay was a fantastic scene stealer. I love Joel Grey, but while he was charming and fun, his performance was awkward and sort of unfocused at times. I feel bad that Lindsay lost the Olivier, cause he really should’ve been in supporting where he was initially expected to win, though at least he’s already got a few.

Sutton’s wig on this filmed ANYTHING GOES bugs the crap outta me.  It looks like it’s placed wrong or it shifted. It’s so distracting.

Sutton has a wholesome quality that worked against her. Patti's earthiness made her far more convincing.

Yet only ONE of them won the Tony.  Guess which one?

I’d say Sutton’s wholesome quality helped her, making the interpretation more likable and buyable as this hopeless romantic deep down. She still brought in enough bad girl edge that it didn’t feel conflicting, instead just adding depth.

I pvr'd this last night but haven't watched it yet.

I have a dvd copy of the 1936 filmed version, and although some if the plot is changed, I quite like Ethel Merman's version of the character. She plays her like a really ballsy broad.  It must gave been something to see on stage.

As if winning a Tony Award is an indication of quality. It's a popularity contest, my friend and don't forget it.

On Long Island we have 3 PBS stations. When I checked, WNET was the one broadcasting the show.

As I already said, I'm team Sutton, but for this Tony discussion, it's not like Foster was ever gonna beat Joanna Gleeson in Into the Woods either.

Didn't note before, but I did enjoy Patti's turn as well, just not as much.

Plenty of people back then were outraged that Gleason was nominated over Bernadette, and just as many were annoyed that she won over LuPone.  Personally I thought LuPone should have won, but Gleason was excellent as well (as was Peters).  Sutton, like Patti, was an excellent Reno.  I'm glad her performance was filmed for PBS.  I wish Patti's had been, but thank God her roof-raising performance of the title song at the Tony Awards is there for all to see.

The only shoe  I have seen that I thought Lapone excelled at was her Evita .

Other than that I found her to be doing the same thing with the same sound and voice.

She doesn't impress me.

Looking forward to reading the comments both on how well people think the filming caught the dynamics of the show and also how Sutton compares to the board members memories of her Broadway run a decade before .

Doesn't matter if Patti's fans were mad, as I said, neither of them were ever beating her. Patti knew she wasn't winning (even before they read the winner's name she looks pissed), she had already lashed out about Gleeson being campaigned as a lead cause she thought she'd be in supporting which would let her win.

I would have liked to see Patti do the Gabriel number, although Sutton did have those impossibly long legs. Patti probably put across a straight song like “I Get a Kick Out of You” a little better.

As I recall, “Anything Goes,” the tap extravaganza that ended Act 1, received a lot of attention. While Sutton was front and center leading the dancers, Patti had to retreat. At the end, Sutton had about 10 or 15 seconds to catch her breath before singing the last chorus. I may have imagined this, but I think Sutton said that in order to get some moisture in her mouth she would bite her tongue. Hard.

Whew! I almost spelled Patti with a “y.” That would have been an unforgivable sin.

I always thought Patti's mention of Lincoln Centre in her acceptance speech for Gypsy was a wink to everyone that she wanted the Tony for Anything Goes, especially considering she makes a point to say she's written acceptance speeches before bu they never made it out of her purse, so that night she was using an old one...could it be the one from 1987
