Come September, we (the world) will have a clear idea of how to open and what needs to be done to safely do so. I don’t think anyone is thinking that shows will open in September, especially since it’s going to take months to recast, rehearse, etc., but by that time I hope they’ll be able to start doing those things needed for a Christmastime/beginning of the year opening.

Just seeing the word Christmastime within the text of your post instantaneously cheered me.

Thank you.

Today's Covid-19 Senate hearing was sobering.  Just one takeaway from Dr. Fauci:  reopening the United States too quickly could lead to avoidable suffering and death.  My grandfather age 54 and uncle age 18 died in January 1919 from the Global Influenza Pandemic.  I don't plan to become another family statistic.  If I have to stay away from Broadway indefinitely to avoid suffering and death, then so be it.

I think the real question is when will people want to come back.  I don't think it's unrealistic at all that Broadway could find a way to have shows running by mid-fall.  The question is, will there be enough people who want to and feel comfortable enough to come to these shows to make them worth running?  The casino business is going through the same thing.  MGM came out with a report the other day saying they'll likely end up having to permanently terminate 60,000 workers, not because they can't reopen, but because the demand is going to be so low that there's no need for them.  It'll be the same question with Broadway (and theatre in general, of course).

I was naively hopeful that I would be able to see Hugh Jackman on September 11th and Company on the 12th.  I think I officially lost all hope when I saw today's announcement.

I think I jinxed myself when the tickets to Hugh's show went on sale and I said how lucky I was that I got center orchestra tickets within the first 20 minutes.

Well, here's something to help relieve our spirits: Plaza Suite isn't cancelled.

No it’s not lol...

Of all shows to be doomed from this, this is not one of them.

This is the show NYC will need to get people back to Bway.

I'll echo Kad's sentiments. The prospect of the NYC theatre community not returning until 2021 or later is upsetting to many people and for many different reasons, but that doesn't mean it's a scenario that should be ignored. I, like Jordan, am hopeful that the next four months will provide more clarity about the future of this virus and the trajectory of the industry, and potentially put everything on the road to recovery sooner rather than later. But the prospect of a longer shutdown is something that people, especially those who work in the industry, need to be mindful of. As it stands now, the shutdown will last for at least six months. If it continues longer, many will need to have a plan. Bills will continue to be due, leases will be up for renewal. I agree that it's important to hope for the best, but optimism becomes dangerous when we let it cloud our ability to plan for the future. If people examine the worst case scenarios and try to develop plans for how to manage them, then expecting the worst can be a positive thing.

So what's the training of someone/an usher pointing a temperature gun at your forehead? Are they a nurse[extra staff, higher wages]?

Someone has a high temperature--are they 'quietly' escorted out of the queue? Imaging the reaction of the person before or after them, even with sd---there would be mass panic in a crowd.

I asked the person recently who did the gun thing to me 'what do you do if I had a high temp? He said 'I dunno, I 'm just a student temp.'------must have missed temp. gun training.

The  'registered' temperature gun person would have to be in protective clothing to protect themselves.

That temperature gun in a crowded theatre space is a farce, not going to happen, or shouldn't.

Thank you.

I don't think it's unrealistic to think Broadway could be back by the end of the year, but I do know Broadway as we previously knew it will not be the same.

I forsee no backstage visits. No stagedooring. But comparing temperature checks at Disney and on Broadway are two vastly different things. You have people packed in a room for 2 hours, the air has nowhere to go. In Disney, it's an open air place. Haven't they already stated basic guidelines for anyone who comes in? Broadway has not. They've assembled some people to start planning a reopening, so I don't think we should be so quick to say that it won't be back for another two years. I think it will be before that, but with very strict guidelines. What they will be, who's to say. But I'd rather go back into a theater where I know neither me nor anyone else there will get COVID than them open too early and have another wave.

When social distancing is no longer needed Broadway and theatre everywhere can come back. That's what everyone should keep their eye on: 1. Social distancing  2. No longer needed.

People aren't social distancing now.  Take my example at Walmart today.  Only around 15% (including myself)  were wearing masks and  tons of people  were  not social distancing.  When I was looking at paper towels this girl came right on top of me.  I moved away from her.  She asked me what my problem was.  I said don't you pay attention to the news and know to social distance 6 feet.  Her response to me was a roll of the eyes. Because of attitudes like this, this virus is going to be around a long, long time.  I'm hopeful for September, not just for Broadway but for concerts and other forms of entertainment.  I just don't think it's going to happen.

I have had a thought about this. For whatever date ends up being the real date that shows will go up, with the re-opening slowly of the city will production staff be allowed to go in ahead of that date to prepare for opening on the date given publicly. Possibly casts go in to rehearse. They can't just open on the 7th for those with tickets from that day on. I am hoping that this is their plan. I assume house staff (Ushers, cleaning staff) will also have to return a bit early to train for changes that will take place. Just my thoughts.

Having a fever doesn't automatically mean you have Covid 19. I had one this weekend and had a sinus infection.

That's true.  But  any place that is now requiring temperatures, if you have one, they are responding as if you automatically have corona.  Hair salons, opened Monday in Jacksonville.  I had my temperature taken at Great Clips.  Had I had one, I would have been shown the door.  And probably not done discretely.

While I am really worried for Broadway sake (a lot of current shows won’t reopen, people out of work, etc), I’m more concerned for smaller theatres in the city. Places having to close their doors completely. As someone who works in such theatres it seems like they’ll really suffer the grunt of this. Broadway will absolutely reopen eventually and it maybe different shoes but shows will come. The smaller theatres I’m not so sure about...

I wonder if regional theaters around the US will open before Broadway and many Broadway actors will perform there for the sake of working/a paycheck.

I appreciate all the optimism and I long for when we can all be back together on Broadway. However, what I feel others are neglecting to talk about is that people are traumatized. There are the outliers who are parading around grocery stores without masks and demanding for things to be open. However I feel the majority of people are quite shell shocked about being around others. People are skittish about being touched, breathed on, or even next to another person. People are being conditioned to fear one another. This could take years to heal from.

When the quarantine started I noticed people were acknowledging each other more and practicing kindness in public. That has seemed to have dwindled since masks were introduced. People appear more inward, anxious and tentative. People appear less comfortable around each other and get agitated when they feel they are too close to someone. This will not disappear overnight. I wonder how this will affect everything. People are completely freaked out by each other and attempts to touch, even in kindness, are considered affronts and disrespect.

I'm also curious as to what productions will serve as guinea pigs for this re-opening. Considering they could re-open just to go bankrupt in a few weeks if there is not enough turn out.

I think anyone willing to open first must consider there will be tremendous finincial losses associated with rebuilding an audience.

Where do you live...here in NYC we must social distance while waiting on line to enter the supermarket, pharmacy or any place that is open AND MASKS Must be worn! I was at TJ's today and CVS and all workers and customers had masks on! If I were a producer I would wait and on the safe side wait till spring '21 to open a show...I doubt BWAY will open in the fall after Sept 6 and I bet Rudin is already planning on opening Music Man for next fall September 2021!
