I saw it yesterday. Afternoon show . Medium crowd. A sprinkle of moms with kids. A whole row of senior ladies behind me. The ladies seemed to be enjoying themselves. The kids were restless. I for the most part had a good time. The music was so disappointing. Loved Emily. Lin Manuel just doesn’t register with me. The main plot line is weak. Dick Van Dyke got a smattering of applause from the ladies. I bought one of those cute popcorn umbrellas because I need more crap around the house. I also would be interested in reading everyone’s audience going experience.
It's really not. While Dick's song sounds like a patter song, Lin's song sounds like a rap song that they've tried to pass off as a patter song. It's a very different sound.
Saw it last night and I have to agree, MEH is right. It started out promising...and went downhill from there.
Sadly the highlights are when Dick Van Dyke and Angela come on and do their thing. And why oh why did they need to cast Lin Manuel. His usual smugness jumps right off the screen, sometimes I had to turn away and wait till the camera was off his face. UGH.
Mary Poppins was never a favorite flick of mine, but I caught this today and had a grand time. No complaints, really... of course, I didn't go in disliking Lin, or having strong opinions on the fine line between rap and patter... Seemed to honor the original, do some things on its own, and was just a nice time out...

I love Lin and Blunt, but am not certain I’ve ever seen the original. If I did, it was when I was so young that I can’t be certain. I’m on the fence about needing to see this in a theater. I fly Delta often enough that it’ll be available on a flight in a few months. I’m seriously thinking about seeing a movie Christmas night after spending part of the day with my mom at her retirement center. I’m in the Oklahoma City area so my choices are a bit limited. I’m leaning toward seeing Vice or driving a bit further and seeing The Favourite. It’ll probably be Vice.

Both are better choices, but Mary Poppins Returns is a pleasant enough film to make it a point to see on the big screen. I hate watching movies on planes, personally.

YMMV, but my friend and I had been anticipating The Favourite, and looking every week to see if it were finally coming to our podunk town. It showed up Friday and we went that first night, and we both thought it was absolutely god awful. And he's in love with British history and I like The Lobster, so was going in based on that. Aside from Nicholas Hoult as eye candy, it did absolutely nothing for either of us.

Yeah , I know. One of my Facebook friends absolutely hated it, but her tastes tend to be very pedestrian (I.e. she loved Game Night and hated Inception and I loved it, but can’t even get interested in Game Night when free on a flight). Meanwhile, it’s topping critics lists everywhere and a friend who works in the film industry listed it as one of the 4 best films of the year. Polarizing for sure. I’ll probably either go with Vice or just go home tomorrow night. BTW, I’m not calling you pedestrian. LOL

Here’s an aggregate of film critics’ top 10 lists for 2018. As you can see, The Favourite was listed on many lists including being ranked #1 by nine critics. It’s the 4th highest ranked (by critics’ scores) movie of the year: :
Thank you so much Miles. I might stead your previous post and thought you were referring to Poppins . Which doesnt seem to be on anyones list. But thanks for this link . Lots of stuff on it I have not seen.
