Hi everyone. So, with the unfortunate closing of Side Show (which I really wanted to see) just 2 days before I arrive to NYC, I have an open spot in my 15 day/17 show January trip ! I can't decide between Motown or Rock of Ages. I love the Motown music but I have not heard great things, the main opinion is that it is more like a concert than a show and I am a little apprehensive. On the other hand, I also love the 80s Rock music featured in Rock of Ages but I hated the movie ! On a side note, I know that closing weeks are busy, but which will be easier to score good seats for, in your opinion ? Your thoughts are much appreciated ! Thank you
Rock Of Ages the stage musical is completely different than the film. So don't let the film affect your decision. If you like that music I personally think it is no contest. I would go see ROA. I would imagine that final night is going to be a blast.
I agree with Fantod! i haven't seen Motown but based on what I've heard, it sounds like the kind of thing I personally would hate. However, Rock of Ages is a fun night at the theatre for sure. The movie doesn't capture the fun spirit of the show.

Having seen both- i would go with ROA- It is a true party every night and i have always had a blast. Also, correct me if i am wrong, but isn't Motown touring and ROA not? If so, You could still possibly see Motown on tour after both these shows have closed on Broadway.
I would recommend "Rock of Ages," because given the loose nature of the book, you can almost guarantee that something out of the ordinary will happen that night.
I was not very fond of Motown, the music numbers were fine, but the book was so boring. Scenography was good. Only seen RoA in London, but really enjoyed it there. It's not the high quality Broadway musical, but it's a lot of fun! The musical is much better than the film.
ROA is a lot of fun, so if you love the music, you'll probably have nothing but a good time. The movie was not good, so I wouldn't let that sway you at all...
Looks like the majority leans towards ROCK OF AGES !!!I just want to be entertained and have a fun night out, I know neither of them is a memorable theatrical experience ! As I said, I am seeing around 17 shows on this trip from Elephant Man to Mormon and Beautiful and from River to Alladin and Gentleman's Guide, so I am not looking for something special, I just feel bad about letting a day go by, without some Theater ! I was really looking forward to Side Show but we all know how that went...
Oh and to clarify a couple of things, seeing a Tour Production of anything is not an option, since I live in Greece and also, I am not planning to catch the very last show of neither of them, since I have other tickets for those days already !
Thank you all for your thoughts, keep them coming !
I actually know many people the New York Times included who would tell you that ROA is a memorable night at the theater. Don't sell the show short. There is a reason it's been around as long as it has.
I thought ROA was a very memorable theatrical experience. I went to see it reluctantly on a night I couldn't see the show I wanted to see, and was surprised how much I loved it. It's now one of my favorites, and the cast album gets a whole lot of play in my iTunes. If you have ever had fun singing along with an 80s cover band (and it sounds like you may have,) you will love the show.
Motown.. haven't been able to bring myself to see that.. Feels like a chore for some reason..
I've seen Rock of Ages three times and always had a fun and memorable time. I saw Motown and can't say the same. Some nice performances of the musical numbers, but a very flat and forgettable show. Not to mention most of the songs featured are not performed in their entirety, but merely snippets.

Well, all of you who were kind enough to offer their help, I just wanted to let you know that, I got a 4th row Center Orch ticket for the final weekend's Sat. matinee of Rock of Ages ! I've never been on a show's Final weekend before and I think that the level of energy, especially on this particular one, is probably gonna be amazing ! Thank you, all !
Neither. I've seen both. If you HAVE to pick one out of the two, I'd go with Rock of Ages. However, I'd recommend expanding your options and pick another show.
I WISH !!! Here Lies Love closes on Jan. 4, along with Pippin and Side Show !!! I really wanted to see all 3 of them but unfortunately I arrive in NYC on Jan. 5 !!!
