What are you on about?

I’m sure they are pretty delighted to be getting such a fabulous new Satine.

say whaaa? We are meant to believe Olivo left Moulin Rouge because of the toxic, horrible environment on Broadway. She was applauded for this sentiment, as if it was her reality, so it strikes me as funny that now another woman of color is stepping into the role and it doesnt seem to be a concern anymore.

Dont see how you think I am suggesting anyone isnt thrilled for Mendoza to be joining.

Well I don’t want to open THAT can of worms again but I think there are reasonable arguments for multiple reasons why she left the show.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I don't believe she left because Moulin Rouge wa a horribly toxic racist environment, but that her reference was about the industry as a whole.

Exactly. She happens to like her comfortable life in middle America. I wish her the best, what a talent.

shes is an incredible actress (ive never gotten the appeal of her voice but i know im in the minority on that), but from Mimi to Anita to BTW Vera Stark, shes got skillz. But she didnt leave the show to enjoy life in the Midwest (i mean she did, but she claimed that wasn't the reason). Come on.

That's correct. And "law professors" such as yourself capitalize the word "I".

have I missed something? I’m pretty sure she left because of Broadways silence over the Scott Rudin situation- not a toxic environment on Moulin. If anything, I’ve heard from people involved that it’s a very happy (and clearly diverse) company.

Thoughts? Personally I was hoping for a little more in the vocals dept, but I’ll reserve judgement until I see the show on 9/25.

So I would definitely agree I was hoping for more depth in the vocals. But I guess they still have some time for work.

I expected more from Natalie and honestly is it just me or does Aaron once again seem to have like not one iota of chemistry with his leading lady. I watched it and was like um its like they are singing this as awkward high schoolers. (Truth be told I think he has more chemistry with Gavin Creel in AHS... maybe call Gavin up see if he's available for Satine.) unfortunately  I definitely would not say that Aaron is giving a "best Actor in a musical" performance in this role. And that's coming from a fan of his work.

I would give them both a break tonight, this was not exactly a great environment to show chemistry in a role. They come out to sing one song in the biggest tennis stadium in the world and in front of a crowd that probably does not care too much about Broadway for the most part.

To be fair this whole performance was awkward. A half filled arena , everyone there to watch tennis, not some actors sing.
I don’t know who thought this was a good idea but they should be fired.

Vocally she was underwhelming, but she is truly gorgeous and I can’t wait to see her in the show.

Too bad Rafa Nadal has withdrawn due to injury issues. He has always publicly said how he likes watching Broadway shows when he plays at the US Open in NYC.

Also, the choice of song and performance does not suit that audience. Maybe something more rousing or more spectacular and maybe attuned to that kind of market. Btw, I am a tennis fan and follow most of the matches if I can.

I agree - give them a break, they were performing on a tennis court. I thought the Lady M's performance was just as awkward. They sounded fine but it really wasn't the environment for a Broadway performance. It's funny how people always seem to call out Aaron for a lack of chemistry, it goes both ways. Why not say Natalie didn't have much chemistry w/her leading man? I'm reserving judgement until they perform together in the show.

Not just you. It doesn't even seem awkward, just totally flat. I'd be more forgiving if this didn't seem like the exact performance he gave with Olivo. I think this is his interpretation of the song and its unchangeable. Maybe he's going for a High School Musical sort of gentle happiness and not exuberance or determination or any grand passion but if he is, it's a bad choice.

Rada will be missed and so will Federer. On the women's side, very strange not having Williams sister in the tournament.

I agree, choice of song was not good. In that arena, you need something rousing like you stated !!

Granted US Open crowd for the most part is not really target audience for Broadway but I would say any publicity is good publicity.  ESPN also mentioned the show quite a few times during the broadcasts yesterday.

AGREED. And 0 charisma. It’s odd how some actors with talent and charisma remain in the ensemble forever, and actors like Tveit somehow break out. He must have a good agent.

Not sexy?  Your opinion...but I think you are in the minority there.

As for Natalie, I think nerves got the best of her last night and expect she will be much improved once the show starts in a few weeks.  Having been there, that's a daunting place to make your debut with the few weeks of rehearsal she's had. The acoustics are challenging, the crowd is still funneling in (which is distracting as heck), and oh yeah, you're doing it on national tv. I also don't think they were asked to "act out" the scene but perform the song to the space while also following whatever covid protocol they were given so let's table the chemistry comments for now.  We don't know if the spacing was intentional but it seems that way.

I was just happy to see my two favorite things (tennis and Broadway) share a stage.

I've seen Aaron in Catch Me If You Can & Moulin Rouge -- and both times, I expected him to be much more impressive with his presence. But he was bland!

On the other hand - I thought he was very good as Enjolras in the film adaptation of Les Miserables.  Was it his hairstyle...or that he got to play an angry young man?

I completely agree. As Enjolras I really found him to be one of the real stars of it. I was very impressed. And even in N2N where I was first introduced to him. Was it that he didn't really have to interact with anyone? But I mean yes, he's attractive, and sings well. But I'm also wondering does he take himself too serious now.  I don't know.

It was fine. They probably didn't want to make it overly sapping out of context, so in a sense Natalie was doing the right thing singing it straight. Just someone forgot to tell Aaron to bring it down a level.
