Considering small theaters are going to be shut down by Tuesday, this production will absolutely be delayed by at least a few weeks. Who knows what will happen here.

I didn’t mind Cantone, but I can understand not liking him. He was very over the top, and he can’t sing at all. But that stuff didn’t get on my nerves cause Byck is a very hammy role, and I thought he never went too far, and because he has no major solos, his talk singing worked fine for me, even though it makes his solos stand out as much weaker to the rest of the cast (although Becky Ann Baker was also clearly there for her acting rather than her vocals). I’m happy to have Andy Grotelueschen playing the part in this production. I loved him in Tootsie. His comedic timing is wonderful and he’s got a pleasant voice. I know that Byck was apparently a much more cold and reserved figure than he’s portrayed as by the likes of Cantone and Lee Wilkof, so I’d be interested to see a more deadpan and less shouty turn in the part. Given Grotelueschen is very talented when it comes to dry humor, I could see him playing the role in a different way, so I’d be very interested to see that.

Mentioning singers in this show, as I’ve said before in this forum, this group of performers excites me, cause in addition to them being talented actors, I don’t think there’s one bad voice in this ensemble. Both the original and Broadway casts have some actors who were clearly actors first and singers second. This has the potential to be the best that the show’s ever sounded. And while I said I was unfamiliar with Cooper, afterwards I looked into him, and I realized I did know him, as he played Audrey II opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, and he did it excellently. He’s a fantastic choice for his role.

And yes, the Broadway production had no shortage of chilling moments. They weren’t afraid to offend, going all the way with the darker aspects.

Just received this email from CSC

We are reaching out with the hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy during these difficult times. The staff at Classic Stage Company is in good health, working remotely, and taking the current circumstances day by day.

Given the new stipulations on mass gatherings, rehearsals for Assassins have been temporarily suspended and the theater and box office are closed. Because of the nature of this unprecedented shutdown, we are responding to these challenges as they come up, and will provide more information in the coming days and weeks. We thank you for your support and ask for your continued patience as we work on potential plans.

Our intention is to resume rehearsals and present Assassins in the coming months. We will have more detailed information shortly on the status of Assassins and what you can do if you are holding tickets for the production. If you are in a position where you are unable to wait for further news and need to make an immediate decision regarding your ticket order, the easiest and most efficient way to contact us is by emailing the box office at boxoffice@classicstage.org.

From everyone here, thank you for being a part of CSC's community. We would truly not be able to fulfill our mission to reimagine classic theater without the support and interest from our wonderful audience members like you. I hope that you and yours stay safe and well, and look forward to welcoming you back to the theater as soon as we can. We will be in touch shortly with more news and updates.

Best regards,

Toni Marie Davis

Thank you so much for your support of CSC. I am reaching out with the hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy during these difficult times. The CSC staff is in good health, working remotely, and taking the current circumstances day by day.

I wanted to provide you with an update on where things stand with CSC and the rest of our Season. Performances for Assassins were scheduled to begin in April, however in light of the CDC’s most recent recommendations, rehearsals for Assassins have been temporarily suspended and the theater and box office are closed. Our intention is to resume rehearsals and present Assassins in the coming months.

CSC has been keeping a close eye on developments as they arise, and has been working hard to adapt to the situation keeping the best interests of our audiences, artists, staff, and our company in mind. We will be updating you as things progress, but if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us any time.

From everyone here, thank you for being a part of CSC's community. They just started rehearsals two weeks ago, so if they resume them mid or late April, they are probably looking at the end of May or early June to even begin performances.

I know this is a very serious time for a lot of people, but...........you have no idea how much I want to make a very specific reference........

Oh, just make the reference already so we can grab a scoop at A La Mode on our way to the orchard!

Ethan Slater posted something today of a virtual rehearsal of The Ballad of Czolgosz. Sounded very good. The spoken portions felt a little off, but besides that, I liked it.

the only way this show is still happening is if they cancel midsummer for next season and replace it with this, and that none of the bigger names have scheduling conflicts. Sincerely hope we get to see this revival some day!

All of the content they're still posting around it (seemingly with CSC's blessing at every turn) indicates that it's their first artistic priority, which gives me hope, as I don't think I've been this excited for a production and cast......literally ever. Obviously CSC's financial motivations are totally aligned with that, as well.

And nothing against CSC's 20/21 season, but I'd gladly pay extra to see this in place of any of those pieces. And I think they know they have a lot of $$ to gain from folks who feel the same.

the only problem is two cast members are shooting a new version of Gossip Girl for HBO Max in the fall so that might be a problem....

I emailed the box office about a refund and they responded rather quickly that they still intended to have this show but just weren't sure about timing yet

That may be fine for people who live in or near NYC, but it's not helpful for those of us who have to travel to NYC and may not be able to come when they reschedule. Anyway, Flying Over Sunset is rescheduling also, and I got a refund weeks ago from LCT for my May show.

The show is not canceled, you won't be getting a refund from CSC until this is all resolved. Also, consider donating your ticket to the theater if you are able.

Got super excited yesterday when I saw Eddie Cooper had posted a pic in front of CSC on his Instagram story with the caption "Coming back soon!"

Couldn't tell if it was just general enthusiasm or if they're actually restarting rehearsals – though the latter feels at least possible, now that we have confirmed reopening announcements from some smaller shows. Anyone happen to know more?

They sent me this last week that I signed up for:

Tell The Story: Celebrating Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Assassins, a Benefit for Classic Stage Company.

This special virtual presentation will premiere on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 8:00pm EST.

Maybe they'll announce dates then.

They got Hillary Clinton for their free virtual event. The entire lineup looks really impressive. I am curious to see exactly what the end result will look like.
