I'm sure that TV ratings are motivating this. Also, keep in mind that Hamilton is selling out in DC at the Opera House where the awards are being televised. It will be inexpensive to get the cast onstage to pull this off.
Sidebar here: I often hear that older people get upset that Doris Day who is now 96 has never received this honor. The truth is that she has been asked countless times over the past 25 years but she refuses to show up for the telecast. The same has been true at the Oscars for a lifetime achievement award. She is a recluse and refuses to travel. Just a bit of old KCH trivia here :)
Anyway, it seems like getting a KCH is only a matter of getting a Broadway bio-musical made about you? Carole King, Gloria Estefan, and now Cher. Wonder where Donna Summer got lost in the shuffle.
Ms. Summer had the poor taste to die. KCH recipients must be living.

Huh, didn't know about that requirement. OMG they need to give it to Carol Channing yesterday, then

That's just crazy. And what about Bette Midler? Considering her smash Dolly run. What has Cher done lately? (aside from The Mama Mia movie) Wonder how they choose these nominees?

I've read this as well, but why does someone have to show up to receive an award???. They couldht even FIND Godard to let him know about the Oscar and he didnt show up either! (and he still got the award).
Yes, it is disappointing that true and deserving honorees like Doris Day and Carol Channing
(these 2 omissions alone with CC's life and DD's life, going from a big band jazz singer to rival Ella, and then what she went on to do...not fair at all) and Doris is not a "recluse"; she works ardently for Animal Rights and does appear at events in Carmel...
...are still withdrawn b/c they can't or won't accept the KCH in person, ESPECIALLY now that NO ONE wants to receive the KCH from Rump; so if Rump won't show up to give them out, why can't they not show up to get one??
2 - Hamilton is only playing the Opera House (and in a MAGNIFICENT staging) through mid September...I don't know if they will be able to film anything while they are still in DC?
There's like 57 Hamilton companies right now so I'm sure they'll find a cast to perform. Knowing the KCH they'll probably reunite the original cast to goose those ratings.

I was going to refrain from sharing my opinion (especially because it’s apparently going to be an unpopular one on this thread), but apparently I’m not able to do so.
First of all, in full disclosure, I’m a fan of Hamilton. I also recognize not every one is and even if you are, you might feel this award is unwarranted. I get that. Personally, if they were receiving a lifetime award, I’d agree it is premature. But they’re not. That also means they’re not stealing a spot from Carol, Doris, Bette, or Liza, all of whom for all we know may have been offered the honor before and declined it. (I’d add Jane Fonda into the mix). In fact, Wikipedia says this: “Doris Day repeatedly turned down the honors because her fear of flying prevented her from attending the ceremony.”
But they have given out special awards before, correct? Such as The Mark Twain Award for Humor, which was added in the last 20 years.. I also think as these honors have a governmental/political aspect to them and Hamilton is a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon that brings our political past and present to the masses in a way none of us could have ever imagined that this award makes sense. I recognize many won’t agree. That’s okay. I remember people being upset last year that LL Cool J, Gloria Estefan and Lionel Richie were being honored. Some valid points were made. The honors were still handed out. We all survived. We will again.
Personally, I don’t care for Reba (even before being reminded of her unkind comments about the Dixie Chicks), but I can acknowledge that her talent has helped her survive in an industry that is not kind to the non-young. I may not like her, but she still is deserving. In fact, when I read her name, I thought “Well, that makes sense.”

This is like the only rational post in this thread outside the ones simply stating facts.
a little annoyed about the wording regarding Hamilton, they describe it as a piece that defies category. it’s obviously a sung-through biographical musical using rap, hip-hop, R&B and various other forms of modern music. it may be in a category mostly by itself but it doesn’t make it not a category.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
I’m fine with them giving Hamilton a special award as it is a great piece of work that has transcended into pop culture like no musical quote has in recent memory. The only issue I have with them awarding the show is that it feels random. It would make sense if they did it when it opened or waited for an anniversary or something. This just reeks of the producers trying to be hip.
The Mark Twain Prize is a completely separate event having no connection to the Kennedy Center Honors is it not?
If they want to recognize Hamilton, fine, but to link it to an award that for decades has been about lifetime achievement in the arts seems strangely motivated.

Tell me about it. Somehow all the art has been sucked out of this show and what is left is an unstoppable marketing money-making machine that rolls over absolutely everything in its path. It's so boring
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Who in their right mind expects two 90 plus ladies to fly across country to accept some award?? If they really wanted to honor them, they could dispense with the rule and have an audio/video hook up or something. It all seems about ratings now for the show......
