Rep Stage Closes 19th Season with LAS MENINAS, 4/18-5/6

Rep Stage, the professional Equity theatre in residence at Howard Community College (HCC), concludes its 19th season with "Las Meninas," playwright Lynn Nottage's account of the seduction of Louis the XIV's queen, Marie-Therese, and the consequences of her scandalous relationship with Nabo, her African servant. Nottage weaves an imaginative tale based on a fascinating but forgotten time in history that examines truths about women and race. Eve Muson, who helmed last season's "Speech & Debate," directs a large cast in this rarely produced play. "Las Meninas" opens April 18 with a limited run through May 6, 2012, in the Studio Theatre of the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA) on the campus of HCC.

Cory Booker Event at CCBC Essex Cancelled

The Community College of Baltimore County's Office of Student Life has canceled its Spotlight Speaker Series event scheduled for April 17 on the Essex campus. The Honorable Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, NJ, who was the scheduled speaker, is unable to travel to CCBC tomorrow due to unforeseen circumstances.

Satta-Fleming writes that The Soldier Dreams "is no more a play about AIDS than The Wizard of Oz is the story of a cyclone," and it's interesting how AIDS and homosexuality, while important catalysts, are both omnipresent and barely there in this beautiful, sad, hilarious, heartwarming offering that Iron Crow Theatre doesn't just produce but conquers.

On Saturday, March 24, over 500 business and arts leaders attended the Arts Council's 15th Annual Celebration of the Arts in Howard County Gala at Howard Community College's Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center in Columbia. This year's annual benefit gala raised $99,000, with an additional $72,000 in donated goods and services in support of the arts in Howard County. Since 1998, over $1 million has been raised through Celebration of the Arts!
